I've had this discussion with friends of mine that live in the middle of the country, and talking about BOBs, and where to go with what vehicle, and what tools and protection to take along.
The "middle of the country" mentioning above kinda spurred another thought, usually my FIRST thought when I hear city people talk about grabbing a gun and "heading for the hills."

What you don't realize, us country boys are already out here... You might be leaving town, but you're invading our property, something I've never known a country boy to take kindly...

So c'mon out... Us boys that grew up in these hills know the land and know how to shoot, and we appreciate it when city boys hand deliver fancy new guns... We don't even mind it when you drop them...

I'm sure some of the city slickers would do well here in the Ozark considering my family has run these ridges since the early 1800s. It won't fare well for any envaders.

These threads are always a bit amusing but I'll bite.

Given the limitations of only a handgun (no rifles or shotguns) and no ammunition restrictions, I would make the following choices:

If concealment is not an issue, ammo supply is not an issue and I don't need to wag the gun and ammo around constantly; something with plenty of power and potential accuracy like a GP-100, maybe with a 6" barrel or a Super Redhawk with a scope.

If I do have to wag the thing around but it doesn't need to be concealed, the barrel immediately gets reduced to 4". The 44 mag is also out (you can carry more .357 rounds than 44 rounds for the same weight). Now I'm looking at a stainless steel 4" GP-100 or a Security-Six. (with a preference for the Security-Six)

If it must be carried and concealed the choices get tougher. Continuing with my revolver preference I'm down to a stainless steel Speed-Six with a bobbed hammer and a 2 3/4" barrel but a Glock model 19 is starting to look good.

Yep. Over and over. Glock 19. Ammo availability and I can shoot it well. Besides, I'll have several other weapons by the end of the day anyway.

Nope, can't choose. I would have to take more than one...each fills a need that the others will not.

oooh... Difficult decision that would probably be made in the last second.
While I would instinctively reach for my Sig 226 (9mm) I might as easily grab my Para SF 14-45A.
Dang.... Now I'll be thinking about this for a while.

Here goes....

Me - S&W M&P CORE 9MM - Reason: Currently the Kit Belt is covered in pouches/holster for it. So, it would be the easiest to 'Grip and Rip' with.

Wife - Ruger SR 22 - Reason: She can shoot it very well, knows the manual of arms for it, has a green laser on it, fibre optic sights, 15 round mags and it's lightweight.

If I had the time, I'd probably roll with my Redhawk in .41Mag since the scenario says we got Video Game Ammo Conditions!

Good God.....Half You Idiots on here I WOULDNT want to run into in a Bugout scenario because You either CANT READ , or don't know the difference of a HANDGUN to a Shotgun or Rifle !

The OP set certain Parameters for this scenario and first and foremost was that you could only choose one HANDGUN ! The OP's scenario was also that you couldn't shelter in place !
Come on Guys......read the OP's entire Post before you start posting what isn't even in the scenario....Get with the program !

Now......If things got to the point and this was the scenario of fleeing and total Anarchy.....? I want a LOT of larger firepower in the form of a CZ97 .45 Auto and about 8 loaded mags. I would take as much ammo as I could reasonably carry.

My thinking is this... if it was to this point of chaos....I'm going to be Eliminating someone that wants to harm , rob , steal , or in anyway means ill will , greed , or harm towards me........ I want the firepower and caliber that's plenty for the Job at hand.

I don't see a cozy little survival scenario here in the woods somewhere eating bunnies and squirrels. I'm going to take from the Evil ones, the Hurtful , the thieves , and the Ill intenders..... and give to myself and mine all they possess......CZ97......Lots of 45 Auto.

I do hope my first deserving casualty is carrying a AK , AR , or for that matter ANY kind of center fire rifle.....RIP.

While I'm siding with the GP100, 6" barrel crowd, I have no illusions.

It will be great for S/D. Ratshot will control snakes, and maybe even help

put some meat on the table. While the GP100 is accurate, ANY reference to hunting for

food, once the SHTF, is moot. Do ANY of you actually hunt, now? Dump

10 to 100X as many people in the woods, all banging away at game.

What little is left won't last long. You have to eat every day, day after day.

While the limitations of any single firearm is regrettable, regardless of what

you choose, it would be a good idea to plan food acquisition, external to the

hunting paradigm.
