Is it just my part of the country or are the SP 101's hard to come by? I"ve had a spurless hammer model SP 101 on order for over a month. My dealer says the distributor can't get any and has me on a "Wish List". Anybody know if the spurless hammer makes it harder to get? Thanks. Tom
I've noticed it in my neck of the woods, too (Youngstown, OH area). In fact, when I bought my SP a few years ago, I wasn't looking for one, I had given up finding one and was looking for a stainless CZ-75. I found mine in the local Gander Mountain and paid a premium because of it. However, it was the only one I'd seen locally and I willingly paid the premium so I could check it out in person before buying. Since buying mine, I haven't seen any more. Good luck with your search, they really are worth the effort!
Yes the SP 101's are hard to come by in my area also. I got lucky about a month ago and scored one at my local Gun Shop. .38 Special SS with 2 1/4" barrel. I added some Hogue Grips and just love this gun.
I have been on the waiting list for one since May 9 at a New Orleans area sporting goods shop. The store had an SP101 with a regular hammer inside a store case, but I want the hammerless-style version in .357 with 2.5-inch barrel, so I held off and placed a special order.
When the guy helping me out was searching the computer for where to order one, his co-worker learned what he was ordering and said skeptically/sarcastically: "Good luck finding that." Suggesting that they are very hot items right now/hard to come by.
They are claiming they can get one for $485 (without tax), which I know isn't a great price, but I do want to support a local independent store (and one that was actually broken into by criminals recently, who stole guns but were later caught.)
Anyway, so now I'm nearing a two-month wait and counting. I'm hoping that by the time it does come, that I don't have to go resolve some quality-control problem right off the bat with it.

I stumbled across an unfired snubby a few months ago on a consignment at my FFL for 350 bucks. Brand new gun but a safe queen for the previous owner. I went straight to the bank and grabbed some cash so's not to lose the bargain..
I have not seen many around here. I was surprised to find one in 327 mag. I excitedly bought it. I shot it once and had to send it to Ruger because I needed pliers to get the brass out of the cylinder.
I went looking for one at a larger independent shop prox 20 miles from here, with hopes of comparing to a S&W Model 60 (both 3") but they had neither in stock. Then I went to a smaller independent shop prox 15 miles the other direction that is known to discount. They had a few new GP100s but only a used GP101 (2.3"). It was enough to convince me to order the one in my signature line. It is in transit now while I wait the mandatory California 10 day period...
Several years ago I was looking for one for my wife for Christmas. Not a lot of gun shops locally and no 101's. Went into a little gun/pawn/junk shop and looked at the 1/2 dozen handguns, maybe 2 weeks before Christmas. "Can I help ya'?" "Naw, looking for a Ruger SP-101." "I can get one." "No you can't." "Yes I can." "No you can't." "Give me 2 minutes." About 90 seconds later from the back of the store "With or without a hammer spur?" "Without." He quopted me a price I don't recall, but reasonable. I was gift wrapping it 2 days later. That's another story.
But that's one sweet, sweet little snubby; silky after an action job per IBOK.
Hang in there, one will turn up. I waited a long time before scoring a 4" Sec-six at a gun show. First I'd seen in years and there were 3 at that show. Go figure.
I've a problem too... I've decided to sell my S&W 640 and to buy a new SP101 for Christmas... About 20 days ago I went to the gun shop and ordered a 2 1/4 barrel, spurless hammer, SP101 with Crimson Trace Lasergrips (that are listed on the catalogue of the Italian distributor); and I told the owner of the gun shop that I needed it for Christmas... He said :"No problem !!! If the distributor has one of those in stock, I'll be able to have it here in 15 days !!!"
Well...The owner of the gun shop phoned me 5 days later and told me that the distributor (Bignami) told him that he didn't know when and IF he would never be able to have any kind of SP101 in the future !!!!!
Now I'm looking for a used one....
I wonder if the shortage is caused by increased demand, or reduced supply. I'd bet it's increased demand. How can people say Obama hasn't accomplished anything? He's sold thousands of guns! :-p
