"US forces have fired so many bullets in Iraq and Afghanistan - an estimated 250,000 for every insurgent killed - that American ammunition-makers cannot keep up with demand."

Spray and Pray is the proven tactic of the US military. Were talking about "Getting out of dodge" here, not taking on 1-4 home invaders nor are we talking about shooting from a good defensive position. If youre trying to get out of a situation so you can fight another day, (According to MerriamWebster, get out of Dodge is "to leave or get out in a hurry."), high volume supressive fire is what you need, good magazine fed semi autos.

Maybe Im taking this "getting out of dodge" thing too literally, but hey, thats what the thread is named, not "defending against a handful of people"

Great guns, I've got a 3" SP101 357 now I'm going to have to get one of those 77/357 rifles to catch up to ya.

I am old and fat. Someone will run my butt down before I reach city limits. I'll just have to stay and defend home and garden. Then the alien zombies show up with the tank.....

Get out of Dodge guns are Ruger 10/22 w/ two 10 round mags taped, sling, and a Tasco 4X scope (getting repaired ATM) and a Ruger Blackhawk .357 SS with 6.5 inch barrel everything stock. Looking to get a .357 rifle to have compatibility of ammo but not sure if I would go with the 77/357 or a lever-action of some type to keep it looking western... Oh the choices!

Very nice GP! The Wiley Clapp is a gorgeous piece! Mine would probably be my P95 and the Mini-14 I'm gonna pick up here in the next month or so. I live in the city so in a G.O.O.D. situation, a 5.56 would be more practical/versatile, but out of town I would prefer a good 30-06 or better. I would take our GP100 4" SS .357, but that's technically my wife's gun and I don't think she'll trade, LOL! Some people think it's funny that hers is bigger than mine, but she can handle it and I feel good knowing that she's never alone with that stainless monster in her purse. She's a damn decent shot too!

I'm also picking up a 10/22 here soon and that, IMHO, would be top of the list for bug out guns.

I think a military caliber would be more practical. I would go with 7.62 or 5.56 NATO and a 45 ACP or 9 NATO.
