Ruger serial numbers

I have from my late father a Standard Ruger with the red emblem on the grips. It has a 4 digit serial number and was told from my father that it was either made in 1949 or 1950. He said he ordered it from a catalog for $39.50 but wasn't sure what year he did it in. I've hear that the box which I do not have is worth alot of money. Any suggestions would be helpful in my quest to find out the year of manufacture. The pistol is in great shape and nothing has ever been replaced or modified to the pistol. It'll stay in the family, handed down through the generations.

Thanks James6591 for your reply. I'm going to send in the $10.00 to find out exactly when and where it was made.

Thanks just did a quick check on my 3 centerfire SA revolvers and found out my SS 32 mag was made in 86, 44 mag in 87 and the 357 mag in 05. Great single actions.
