I find it difficult to believe that Ruger would have released a gun with such poorly fitted grips.
Sorry to rain on your parade.

Seldom...
I think the grips are an aftermarket add-on, installed by someone after the plating job was done. I am working on them to improve their "fit", but I am not a gunsmith, so I am proceeding very carefully. Hopefully we can get them to fit a bit better with some 'extra-care'.

Well Mayor,
I filled out the same form about a single six I just aquired about the same time as you did so we are in the same boat.... I wonder how many requests they get every week. I called customer service and asked about a few things and one of them was the timeline for this form and the lady said "usually around 30 days, but it depends on number of requests". I've been waiting like a kid at Christmas time.

I hope they move a bit quicker than the 30 days comment suggests. I did look at my bank status to see that my $10 check dated July 2nd has not been cashed yet at Ruger. That's not a good sign for speed and efficency.

I imagine that now that they have implemented the "letter only" scenario they have been inundated with requests they hadn't anticipated. Now that it requires a letter to respond to us, they may very well have created more work for themselves than they had before. Could well have been part of the plan to discourage requests by charging $10 per letter, but it likely hasn't reduced the frequency of requests.
Back when all you needed was a 'phone call, you could get a response in just a couple of minutes in most cases. Now your personal information must be entered and the data entered as well and a letter "typed" and mailed. Methinks they may have shot thrmselves (and us) in the foot . . .so to speak. We'll see.

I received my letter from Ruger today. (one month after mailing the request and fee). Needless to say I am a bit disappointed in the reply, but there ends my search for information. Ruger said. Blackhawk #29725 was produced in November 1962. Unfortunately all records of the details of that firearm were lost in the flooding after that date.
Too bad, I was hoping to learn about the barrel length, at least. But on the bright side this gun shoots great !! I may wind up keeping it !

I received my letter from Ruger yesterday. I thought we could get production numbers but I guess I can look that up on the net. It is still a pretty nice service. I would like to find some information on some old Winchester rifles and shotguns I have but they dont seem to offer that service.
Here is what I got: "Thank you for your recent letter inquiring about your Ruger Single Six revolver, serial number 413xxx
Our records show that this revolver was shipped in March of 1965, as a model RSSMX, .22 magnum caliber, with an extra .22 L.R. cylinder.
Enclosed please find an instruction manual for your Ruger Single Six."
The manual is fun to look at with parts and prices, you can get a barrel for $14.50.

It looks like a neat gun and I would view it as a shooter.

That's typical of the information we have historically received from Ruger, the ship date and "shipped configuration". In this case the RSSMX model number indicates a .22 Magnum Single-Six with a 6-1/2" barrel, marked "WIN. .22 RF MAG. CAL." on the left side of the frame, with the "X" indicating it was a convertible which is confirmed by the comment regarding the "extra .22 L.R. cylinder".
And wouldn't it be nice if we could still actually get a barrel for $14.50? |

You're in luck. Letters for Winchesters are obtained from the Buffalo Bill Cody Historical Museum in Cody, Wyoming since they now own the Winchester collection.

I am quite sure I have seen those grips somewhere. Thinking a pile of them at a table at some gun show perhaps.
Their very poor fit shows they are low in quality, however the plating job looks to be fairly well done.
I would replace those grips, and label the gun as a shooter.

After a lot of study, I think I have the answer for the poor-fitting grips. There are designed to fit the newer Blackhawks...close but 'not quite right. I am working slowly at smoothing the edges to make them better.
Meantime I have listed the gun on Armslist and have several inquiries and counter-offers on it. We'll see if someone agrees with the appraisers.
