I know there are countless studies, stories, myths, and rumors regarding stopping power and penetration.
However, I have zero issue with a .22 LR for SD or CCW.
Anyone who has either (1) been shot with .22 and been unphased or (2) shot someone else with a .22 and had them been unphased, please speak up.
Of course I would prefer a .357 or larger, but I don't think using a .22 is "better than nothing". (And no I don't wish to be proven wrong firsthand. I personally hope I never have to point a gun at someone)
Hinkley put a lot of hurt on people with a lowly .22

I believe the average person can get off 2-3 well aimed rounds of .22lr to every one of a centerfire cartridge. With practice maybe even more. I don't consider myself an above average shooter (poor eyesight, shakey, in my 70's) but even I can put ~10 rounds of .22lr in a 6" circle at 20 feet in 2.5 seconds consistantly, with my SR22. The LCR is slightly slower, due to the double action, but just as accurate, 8 rounds in the same time. That's just about as fast as I can pull the trigger.
Multiple holes in one's hide is, at least, equal to one bigger one, if not greater than. http://www.hmds.ws/Pics/SR22RapidFire.wmv |

.22 wouldn't be my first choice, but as others have said, if it's what you have, carry it. if its all you can control, carry it. no shame in a .22 at all.

I'll agree that carrying a good working .22-LR caliber is better than carrying a "stick" or nothing. However, I believe if your going to carry, make sure you have enough gun for the job always.
So now comes my suggestion to get yourself a good pistol in the 9mm Luger caliber or .40 Smith & Wessson, .357 Mag, what ever you feel the most confident with and can shoot accurately at 21 feet.
My wife started off with a .22 cal and climbed the ladder to the .40 Smith & Wesson in a Glock pistol. It only took her about 6 months of good practice to GET R DONE! |

Get something that you will carry. Anything that you carry, regardless of caliber is better than the gun you left at home!

I wouldnt want to rely on a 22 to stop somebody, i'd prefer at least 38+p, at the minimum, but if it's all i had, i'd sure use it if i needed it.

Id rethink that 22 as mentioned previously the more knock down power within reason the better. There is some excellent ammo available for 9mm and up these days that will give you the edge. I have had to draw my weapon twice when individuals decided i was a target due to my work. during both incidents i was carrying permitted a 9mm after the second incident i swapped the 9 for a 45 acp.
Luckily in both incidents when I showed the perps I was armed also they didnt want to play! This was the best outcome i could have hoped for no one fired a shot and no member of the public ever knew the incident had occurred.
if i had not been armed i would not be typing this post i would have been one of many Gang related deaths here in California! If you are goign to carry a gun carry a real gun
one capable of doing the job required.

The best gun to own would be the one you'll actually carry. Shoot both & see what you like. If you're fine with a 9mm or .380, they do offer more "stopping power" than a .22, but if you don't carry them, they do you no good; better to have a .22 that you DO carry than another, larger caliber that stays at home.

Not me. You're just asking for trouble.
Do a little research, and list for us all the LE agencies that use the .22 as their primary round.

Hinkley put a lot of hurt on people with a lowly .22 | Sorry to challenge you, but I don't understand your "being shot and being phased or unphased" scenario. You must mean a single accidental wound. That would of course be painful, and one would be seeking medical help ASAP.
If I ever was in a situation where some scumbag was using a .22 and I was the target, I'd take a couple of rounds as I put that .22 so far up his orifice that a team of surgeons would spend all night trying to retreive it. Just sayin.
