I'd be interested if the poll results were significantly different if .45 Colt were separate from .45 ACP. It was an easy poll for me to vote in though, because I've been carrying a Vaquero for the past couple of years, but will soon start carrying my .45 ACP again. More city time than country time now...

I'm a Wilson 45 guy, but do like my Sig 225 (9mm). Recently purchased an SP101 which I will try the 357's to see how I like them.

Talking i carry 9mm

[QUOTE=deputy125;60112]Effective is defined by the person with the weapon. Sometimes sheer power is not an option for everybody. Be it anything from a physical concern---arthritis, stroke, injury, weakness or physical imparment where a minimal recoil or a light weight weapon is necessary,

I totally agree, I see my 9mm carry is running 2nd to the 45. But most women, like my wife, are not gonna carry some big hand cannon.
Ive always thought the smaller calibers 380 thru 22lr can be used effectively.
all these guns usually have at least 6 rounds,Muggers/bad guys dont wear Flack Jackets. How far away will you be from the bad guy when shoot? 10feet or less more than likely. I havent seen the person who can take 6rds of 380 thru 22lr at 10 feet and still attack you.Maybe its just me, the so called experts in the magazines sure disagree with me.But they dont want to stand 10 feet in front of my 22lr either.lol.

honestly, i'm still suprised at the low turn-out of the .22. I still know that the beretta bobcats are still selling well.............

My main CCW is a Ruger SP-101 .357 with Federal 125gr JHP's. In the summer ( Shorts and T-shirt)I do carry a NAA guardian in 32acp.

I had to vote 38 SPL. Down here in Dixie it`s hot 9 months out of 12 and my S&W 642 is easier to conceal then my SP101 357. I prefer to carry the 357, simply depends on how I dress.

Yesterday, it came to me that no matter what you carry as a CCW, if you have confidence in it and your ability to use it, and if your mind set is ready for combat, 9 times out of ten your body language convinces the BG to abandon hostilities (if he is not drugged or drunk).

While I was traveling through an area of informal housing (squatter camps) on either side of a narrow road allowing only two vehicles in different directions. While keeping to the the speed limit (70 kph or 42 mph), a minibus taxi (the most feared and also the most popular means of public transport in South Africa) tailgated me and flicked it's light for me to go faster as the oncoming traffic was too dense for him to pass. I obviously ignored him and was threatened with a wheel spanner. As soon as he could pass, he braked, forced me to stop (and all the traffic behind me as well) and approached me wielding the wheel spanner. To all purposes and intents to either attack me (lone occupant of the vehicle) or to damage my car.

About 5 yards away, he stopped, gave me a good look and retreated to his taxi and drove away.

The only explanation I have, is that because I was ready to retaliate within the bounds of the law, and effectively (with a Browning HP and 2 extra mag.s carried concealed and at no time drawn) my body language warned him to retreat.

For background information, within the last month two separate incidents of taxi violence occurred on highways in the municipal area of the greater Johannesburg in which people were killed.

I do not travel unarmed any more, but also refrain from advertising the fact to keep from becoming a target, as firearms are very sought after items by the lawless here in South Africa.

9mm for me. I believe that the .357 is far LESS than most imagine, once you reduce the bbl. to 2". A heavily loaded 124 gr. HP from a 4" 9mm is so close to it at that point that the BG won't know the difference.
I think the reason why the 9x19 is so controversial is because it's right on the cusp, between so-so and substantial. With the ball rounds going only 1100 fps, it's nominal. With a good 124 gr. HP @ closer to 1300, it's as good a chance as you get with a pistol. Deliberate training is the ONLY way that the shooter can impart any degree of "inherent accuracy", regardless of the gun or caliber.
Head and torso shots look really good in discussion, but in truth, you are far more likely to be offered only an arm or leg. Being able to break bones and cause severe bleeding are the real criteria.
Of course, it's always better to be able to avoid putting a bullet into anyone, and I never have, altho I've had to shoot back more than twice. 9 worked for me then, and I'm keeping it.
