One in the pipe, always. From my old MP days to my LEO days now.

if I am carrying, I have one in the pipe. At home, all of my guns have empty chambers. It's a personal choice. The way my brain works is this- if I have DIRECT control of a firearm, I am OK with one in the chamber. Otherwise, the chamber is empty. The only exception is my wife's SP101 which stays fully loaded in her desk, locked, with the key close by when we are home.
I am not saying this is the best way to go, but for my wife and I, this is how we feel the safest.

It's interesting to look at the video of the 71 year old hero of the Ocala internet cafe robbery. Had he needed to chamber a round, the BG no doubt would have murdered him. This is so even though "it takes only a second to chamber a round." You can see the video at
The hero saw the BG was distracted and went into action. He begins to draw at 33 seconds, aims at 34 seconds, and fires at 35 seconds into the video. This happens while he's charging the bad guy.
Was there time for the hero to rack the weapon? Remember, only 2 seconds transpired between the hero drawing and shooting (33 to 35 seconds). As it is, the BG had covered the hero with his own weapon by 34 seconds and could have fired before the hero's initial shot (or simultaneously). Had the BG pulled the trigger, the hero may have died.
Now I've read the BG claims the gun wasn't loaded. Even if that was true, you can't rely on that, and the video demonstrates the victim had only 2 seconds to draw, aim, and shoot ... or die.
Second point: There wasn't time to root around in a backpack or purse. Students and ladies, this man lived because he had his pistol on his person. He had only to reach in his pocket to draw. I'm thinking he showed a lot courage, poise, and the effects of practice. Notice that in the draw stroke, he has his offhand on his chest (32 second mark), out of the way. I don't know if he is mere enthusiast or had been in the service, but he has some knowledge of self-defense technique.

The last shot fired was questionable. There was a ton going on at that point and with the BGs having fled to the street, the door closing and a very limited field of view there was a significant opportunity for innocents to be struck with that last stabbing onehanded shot.
I do not doubt that I would do the same thing in his position though. Adrenaline took that last shot for him, in my opinion. Glad it worked out with no stray rounds striking an innocent. The shooter showed good poise by removing his finger from the trigger after the last shot (at least it looks like he did) and it looks like he kept the muzzle away from the patrons as well.

| One in the chamber Poll
I think I have seen a thread in here about whether or not people carry CCW with one in the Chamber or not...I would like to see a poll.
I used to be of the opinion that I would not carry with one in the chamber, but after experiencing and watching some Tueller drills, feel that not having a round in the chamber amounts to not being prepared.....
I am interested to find out how many people carry with a round in the chamber and if they do not, why....

I carry with one in the chamber and always treat the weapon as such. I used to think that I would reserve the chambered round for more "dangerous environments" but you never know when the situation may quickly change. It is better to know that you will always be able to get off a shot as soon as you weapon clears the holster, pocket, or whatever, than wonder if you have one in the pipe or not.

I carry mostly revolvers, so all my chambers have a loaded round
When I carry a semi-auto, like my Beretta Bobcat, AMT Backup, or other, I always keep a round chambered.
The reason I carry revolvers is their "draw and shoot" capability, so if I can't do the same with a semi-auto, what's the point?

Everything I own is condition +1, but is locked in the safe unless on my person, my wife's person or in our vehicles. Another question, which I think is just as important, to add is: How often do you cycle your carry ammo? You just may be carrying +1, but that +1 may also be a dud, even with the most reliable ammo! There for NOT condition +1 ;-)
