I carry because I live in Fayetteville, NC and to those who have been stationed at Fort Bragg, you know what I mean. Fayetteville and surrounding areas are primarily military friendly but here lately we have an abundance of thugs, gangs, and people who really hate soldiers. Thugs and soldiers do not mix. But since I was young and playing sports, I always hated coming to this city to play any sport because of the rivalry and the gang violance. Here recently we had a few soldiers who were victims of drive by shootings and stuff like that. Also, my wife and daughter were stalked by a begger at a local Donut shop at night so she now carries also. Besides, the next best thing to a woman is a gun for protection.....like Lynal on Charlie Brown with his freakin blanket.

Because I have been on the business end of a firearm 3 times and none of the holders were police officers.

The first was in Junior High. Wondered through a field on the way home and was encountered by a land owner (I think) with a shotgun. Not the right think to do but there were 3 of us (I think) and he must have felt scared?

Second was in High school. I was at a fast food place. Someone I was with saw someone they "knew" and apparently they didn't like each other. The other person confronted the two of us with a handgun. No idea if it was loaded but I still didn't like that at all. In fairness, it was High school and I had several dumb friends.

Third time. Delivering news papers in a rural area. It was about 4:30 in the morning. I was driving down a dirt road looking for a new subscriber. There were only two houses on the road but the road went on back behind them towards a barn. You couldn't tell that from the street or even the road since there were no street lights around. Of course there were no numbers on the houses either. We already delivered to one house by means of a box on the main road so we (my wife and I) were trying to figure out which was which.

I was shinning a flashlight looking for numbers on the house and couldn't find any. So we drive back past the houses to see if there is another we didn't notice. We get to the barn and realize there isn't anymore and turn around. Now we have no idea what to do. So I pull back up to where the houses are and hear the most unforgettable sound of my life. An AK47 being discharged 3 feet from my drivers door into the ground.

The owner of one of the houses thought we were stealing from them, not sure why. I was sitting there with a fully loaded AK47 being pointed at my wife and I trying to explain what we were doing. The whole time he is yelling about us trying to break in. I point out the car full of news papers but he isn't listening. After a while he let us go and I called the cops. They did nothing. I mean nothing at all. The talked to him. That was it. No arrest, no ticket. They talked.

I decided right then that it will never happen again. The next time someone (other than a police officer) points a gun at me, someone is getting shot. Period. I am not going to feel helpless like that ever again.

Now, I have changed my life in many ways to avoid being on the business end ever again, but I maintain what I said above. Next time, someone is getting shot. Me or them.

Plus I have a family now and feel that my duty is to protect them at all costs. I am not above or against fighting someone, but I have a young son and couldn't possibly duke it out while trying to protect him. It just isn't practical.

Although I don't carry all of the time, it is comforting to know I,m legal under those circumstances when I feel the need for or just desire extra security. My wife and I are now seniors and some out there may view us as easy targets in certain locations or situations. Still may be targets but perhaps not so easy.

I just feel that it is better to carry and not need to rather than need to and not have one, kinda like a condom. I feel that the criminal element in this country is out of control and with the economy it just breeds more crime and want to make sure that myfamily and I are well protected. I cannot fight as well as I used to do to age and my disibilities. I also figure that I might as well before the tree huggers try and ban all citizens from owning weapons.

When we moved back to NH 23 years ago I got my carry permit but didn't carry that much. I then bought an SP and once I got that it started to tag along most of the time when I left the house. Now I am in my 60's it or the LCR is always close by.

I decided to carry ( Ruger LCR .357 w/B.B. 38 Special 158gr SWC ) because I live in Arizona and there's no reason not to. Don't even need a damned permit anymore to conceal.

14 years ago i was attacked and crippled by a bunch of g****** little teenage thugs in charlotte NC. if i'd have had a handgun on my person, i wouldn't be limping today, they'd be underground. the slimy little b***** that did this to me still have it coming. i don't forget or forgive.

For me, it was pretty simple. There was no one particular event, but rather the simple desire to protect my wife and myself from becoming the next "easy target/victim" as we grow older.
I grew up around folks that carried weapons as a matter of course. It was just like putting a pocket knife in your pocket. Having said all that; here is why everyone should go armed:
Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These young people were kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in the most heinous crime in Tennessee ever.

If you have family to protect, you had better go armed.

Just wanted you to know that thanks to you I have to clean off my computer keyboard before the coffee dries up.

This thread was riveting and it was good to see how other people think. I am currently in the military and have been for 16 years. I have pulled duty in Iraq, and know what it feels like to wake up in the middle of the night and reach for your M-16 and have it not be there. For anyone who has not experienced this, it is f'ing frightening. Grew up in NYC and no one had weapons of any sort; not even a shotgun in the closet. Someone on here said it best and I will paraphrase: I have quite a few reasons to carry a handgun, and they all share my last name.

I have watched what I feel is the decline of our civilization... LOL Not too dramatic, huh? But i have seen people get beat up for no reason, and children lose their lives entirely too early to ignorance and stupidity. I hope to God that I never need to discharge my firearm in defense of my family. I really do. But one day, someone is going to try to harm me or someone in my family, and I promise you, they will regret that day for however much time they have left in their lives.
