When my rotator cuffs and knees went to hell. I decided I was to old and crippled to fight, so I started carrying concealed. But have had a rifle or shotgun in the truck since I had license to drive.(or both)

Several incidents a few years back around our home town brought me to the realization that while yes it is my right. It is my duty to protect my family. And when you need them the cops are hours away.

Not a carrier, yet. After hearing another story yesterday from a neighbor of a drug addict walking around the neightborhood checking for unlocked doors to people's home's and from reading the posts on this thread I've decide its time to apply for a CCW license. Thanks for all who post on this forum so I can get info on the subject. Anybody got any good sources on books for CCW? I've already gotten a couple of books from the Paladin Press on "point shooting". Thanks

This is such a fascinating thread.

My main reason for CCW is my ex-husband. Our recent divorce was not his idea and he cyber-stalked me and threatened my life. I got a restraining order, which is just a tiny piece of paper, and I felt completely vulnerable. I'm 4'11'', he is 6' 0" 280 lbs and he is really ticked off!

Now that the dust has settled and I moved to another state I was losing sleep thinking of the "what ifs". I have a young child and I couldn't sleep at night thinking that my ex might show up and 1) Try to hurt me 2) Try to hurt my child or 3) Kidnap my child and take him out of the country (where the ex has family ties) and I would have been helpless to stop him. As I was worrying about all the "what ifs" I set off the silent alarm at my roommates house. 55 minutes later the police arrived.... I realized then if it had been my ex and not me...it could have been disaster before the police even pulled into the neighborhood.

So now I carry everywhere...practice often...and sleep well

I live in a REALLY nice neighborhood. In the space of one month, the houses on both sides of me were broken into, one, the owners were home. I have a wife and three small children, 'nuff said!

I cannot remember when Oregon first started allowing concealed carry, but that day was when I decided I would get one. Many years later a friend of mine had one and I still could not afford to get one. Then I put it off and it wasn't until 2006 that I was finally able to get it. Not sure if I was ready for the responsibilty before then. Once thought of it as a macho thing and that is not responsible. After 5 years, I hardly ever think about it. Leaving home without the weapon is like not putting on pants.

Initially I decided to get mine when I discovered there is no legal way in Oregon to carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle. Even if the gun is unloaded, for example an auto with the magazine out, it still isn't legal if there is ammo in the vehicle as well.

Getting my concealed permit meant I didn't have to worry about all that.

But shortly after obtaining my permit, I decided to start actually carrying a firearm because, well, you never know.

Economics is a long time interest of mine and I know what is coming shortly and so many will wish they had a firearm.

I'm expecting my CWP next week and just got back from a gun show where I tried various concealed holsters.

Shooting next door at work did it for me plus getting older and know I can't duke it out with someone anymore.

I was interested in CC back in the late 1960's however CPL permits in Michigan were under the control of local gun boards who saw themselves as gods who only gave permits to special interest groups. Even people who were in life threatening situations were told to get a cell phone and a restraining order, but that changed 10 years ago when Michigan become a shall issue state, and i promptly got my CPL. It is vary comforting to carry 24/7 and know that you and your family will have a fighting chance if the unexpected should happen, plus a CPL let you purchase a hand gun on the spot without a purchase permit in Michigan so that alone makes the CPL worth having if you should find a good deal on a new Ruger that you can't live without.

I obtained a CHL because I finally (!) live somewhere that has shall issue! It came to TN and NM after I lived in those places. I've had several pre-CHL violent encounters with goblins, including three attempted muggings (2 in CA, 1 here in TX right after I arrived), one attempted home invasion (good neighborhood in Las Cruces, NM -- the cops just drove down the street, a good 30 minutes after my 911 call -- never came to the house), an attempted carjacking, and several other events -- including the outright disappearance of a cousin and the loss of a high school friend to a serial killer -- that have convinced me that the world is a dangerous place.

All my best,
Dirty Bob

As a retired LEO who carried concealed off duty, it just feels better. Over the years I have personally found that the more who carry, the better. And there is no reason needed to carry concealed, as it's a constitutional right of every law-biding citizen. I would suggest every adult get a CCW permit.
In a nut shell, you have three elements to our society #1 The law-biding citizens
#2 The Police #3 The criminals.
As a rule of thumb, the criminals only prey on the law-biding citizens.
That's why you seldom hear of police being car-jacked out of their cruisers or getting robbed.
And the reason the criminals don't rob cops? They know they are armed.
And as a concerned husband and father I have provided for my wife and daughter to have CCW permits also. They are very valuable to me and I want them to have a fighting chance to survive whatever they encounter.
