Update: My wife received her permit on the 21st and she started carrying that day. She is getting used to the idea and is starting to gain confidence in her belief that she has the ability and will to defend herself.

I live on a resort island...I carry sporadically out here, depending on where I'm going, what I'm doing, etc.
When I am off-island, in America, I ALWAYS carry. I have taken the time over several years to get LTC's (or CCW's) in several states and now have coverage for 38ish states.
Also have taken time to practice and get proper training in various forms of SD, both armed and un-armed. Train the way you want to fight, because, when the S hits the fan, you WILL fight the way you trained!
Wife and kids never know if/when I am carrying, short of a big hug, and they know not to mention it or make any kind of big deal about it. Wife has zero interest so far in shooting. Hope to break that down one day, but to each his (her) own!

If I wanted to carry, my wife would support it. In fact, I think she, more and more, wishes I would carry. In New York State, my county in particular, the judge wants to approve your ccw. You just have to have a good justification/reason for it. He wants to be sure you've thought it out before applying.
I can't think of a good enough reason that I think he would go for.
If I had what I thought was a good enough reason, I'd then have to get an appropriate handgun. What a shame that would be, huh?

My wife enjoys shooting as much as I do, but she does not yet have her carry permit. Soon.

I have carried legally for 17 years. At first my wife used to ask "where are you going that you think you need a gun ?"

My response has always been "Nowhere. If I thought I needed a gun to go somewhere, I wouldn't go to such a place. I carry the gun in case I end up in such a place without knowing it beforehand, in time to avoid it."

She knows full well the sense of that. We were once in an armed robbery and, being unarmed, were left to depend on the mercy and good will of the chap who shot up the ceiling and picked ME as the one to walk the bag around to all the restaurant patrons collecting their wallets while he kept the gun on me.

Her interest in shooting is mild, at best. She insists I bring home targets from the range, though and takes pride and satisfaction at the "good" ones (those are the only ones I bring home).

My wife supports my carrying and used to carry but arthritis finished that. I've carried for over 40 years.

Long story short: my wife didn't know I had bought a gun until 2 weeks after I had it. She was NOT happy that I didn't discuss it with her (my bad). She now knows I have one (I have 2) but we do not talk about it. I'm 99 % sure she doesn't know that I have my license or carry sometimes (haven't carried with her, yet). I'm sure the day will come, but why stir the pot if not needed.

Perhaps you should talk to your wife more often

My wife has never pushed me to get a CHL, but she didn't complain when took the class and submitted my documents. She likes shooting, but is far from proficient. I think she appreciates the fact that I can shoot and handle a gun proficiently but doesn't see the need for me to carry. On the other hand, she won't complain when I do.

My wife has her CC permit, and carries a Sig P238 in a Remora type friction holster. My wife's small build requires a small but reliable weapon and comfortable holster.
