In most states (if not all) unprotected facilities that posts a sign at the entrance of a building stating "No Firearms" is meaningless to the law. You are allowed to carry your CCW inside the establishment. If you are caught, they can only ask you to leave. If you do not leave when asked to do so, it's trespassing.
Some may not like the way I do this. I keep my CC permit and driver lic, together. If I am asked by a LEO to see my driver's lic, I am going to give him both. Why? Because I don't want anything to be a surprise to him. In Florida you don't have to say anything unless he would ask.
In Texas the size, wording, and even size of the lettering must follow a prescribed format written into the law. We with CCW permits are trained to recognize these----and it is perfectly legal to walk past any other wording or type of sign...(keeping in mind the word is Concealed)....the chances of discovery are miniscule---the defense would be: not legally posted. If, however, the business owner calls my attention to the fact of his "no guns" symbol or sign-then I have been verbally notified and must leave and not carry on future visits-so when I go in where I see a non-legal sign or symbol---I might talk about Apples or Zebras-but never mention weapons...why educate the anti-gun owner to post properly-be quiet and enjoy the right to carry. The Legislator who wrote the law in Texas is a gun-lover and has a gunstore/training facility-he and his sponsors wrote as much freedom into the law as he could-and the stats show in Texas, like EVERY other state-violent crimes against persons took a nosedive-the law succeeded in its purpose.
Baldy-that's the law in Tx -to give him both-and from an ex-LEO's point of view-it's courteous whether the law or not-the officer's going to appreciate your considering his safety and peace of mind.
Be careful about 'no firearms' signs. Although they are meaningless in some states, there are some states where they have legal standing - in Texas, for example, there's a prescribed format for the sign, and that format does carry legal weight. Best advice: understand the laws in the state where you are.
No one should know you are carrying; concealed means concealed. If asked, I usually answer "if I were, I wouldn't tell you"
If a LEO pulls you over your dealing with him on a man to man bases. I allways figured I got whats coming in the way of tickets, or butt chewing for doing something. I respect him and his position. Needless to say I got very few tickets in my life. Now butt chewings, that's another story. I was a Truck driver,and I have dealt with a lot of LEO's. Good guys doing a rough job.
When I wuzza LEO-I'd rather chew a butt and make a point than hit a working man in the back pocket-I knew what a $60 ticket would do to my plan!!! Got called in the Chief's ofc. one day-seems the dept. had changed ticket book styles twice and I still had tickets left in my 2-year-old book-got mine chewed that day but I just told them to check the accident stats in my beat-way down.
One critical thing about CCW-you're almost certain to be by yourself till the problem is over-go through the extra effort/inconvenience to carry reloads for primary and backup gun. I carry no less than 34 rounds revolver or 3 clips auto-more on the truck seat. Stats show when the shtf-you fire more than you mean to and don't realize you're still shooting till you're dry-it's a plus if your backup holds the same round as primary, in case primary fails. I carry .357 in primary and all my reloads are hot .38s-they fit either gun. One more thing-a good flashlight is imperative-I don't want to tell a grand jury "I thought I saw" anything-and a good enough light can blind the adversary.Lots to consider!
If you go to the trouble of getting a License, carry all the time that is possible. Get a gun you are proficient with and figure out a comfortable means of carry, where you will always have it with you. You don't look for trouble, it finds you, and you don't know when. Always be Prepared.
Tip: You wouldn't trust your life on a cheap gun, don't trust it on a cheap holster.
I find it amazing that people will spend $1000+ on a CCW, but won't spend more than $50 on a holster.
If you are using a cheap holster, check out the higher quality ones next time your at your local firearms dealer. Once you find one that fits yoru carry style, think if the SHTF, which holster would you want?
