Looking to get either an LCR or 2" SP-101. How bulky is the SP in front pocket carry? And I don't mind if the grip peeks out the top of the pocket either. I'd just like to see how it looks. Thanks! - |

I don't have any pics but it fits in the pocket of jeans and won't stick out the top pocket at all.

A 3" barreled one will stick out of a jeans pocket a little, I just cover it with a handkerchief or scrap of cloth.

Gary, I've been researching this question for a couple of months now. Lots of folks carry the 2" SP in their front pocket. I plan to buy one in the next few days. I'll post pics of it "in pocket". My hesitation with the LCR, disregarding caliber, is the recoil of such a light gun. Besides, the SP101 is shiney, and shiney is good, right? If you haven't yet, go and pick one up and handle it; once you do you will want it. That is, of course, if you like guns! |

Gary - the 101 will fit, depending on what pants you're wearing... one thing to keep in mind is that the SP101 weighs twice as much as the LCR. this is good or bad, depending on how you look at it... TN.Ruger

actually, the LCR is a pretty sweet shooting little gun. the recoil isn't bad at all, IMHO. ![]() granted the SP101 will have less recoil...but the LCR is not unmanageable. TN.Ruger

I was just going to post a question regarding pocket carrying my SP-101. I came upon this thread, so I'll ask here. I'm now sitting at the keyboard with the SP-101 2-1/4" sitting in an inexpensive Uncle Mike's #4 pocket holster. The jeans I'm wearing are Wrangler brand, and the right front pocket depth is 7-1/2" from the top outer edge of the pocket to the middle of the bottom of the pocket, and the top opening of the pocket is 4-1/2" from corner to corner. The stock grip of my 101 is visible by a little more than 3/4". The 28oz loaded weight of the revolver is also a lot more noticeable than the 18oz loaded weight of my S&W 642 airweight. But the reason for my wanting to pocket carry the SP-101 is for the .357's greater velocity/energy, as well as reduced perceived recoil of the heavier gun. Other posters on this thread mentioned that they carry the SP-101 2-1/4" in their jeans pockets without the grip showing, and I'd like to know what kind of jeans they're wearing, and what kind of holster they're using. Also, if I'm wearing walking shorts with a pocket depth of 10-1/2" and pocket opening of 5-1/2", the gun's hammer gets snagged on the corner of the pocket lining during a draw. If I could bob or replace the hammer of the revolver without any issues of gun-smithing fit of a new spurless hammer, or with any issue of light primer strikes with the reduced mass of a revised hammer, I'd consider doing the modification. Any ideas? I really want to pocket carry this gun since IWB doesn't work well for me, and a waist-pack (like some I've seen available), just seems too "obvious" a means of carry, as well as more involved than just slipping a gun into a pocket. I didn't mean to hijack this post, but it seemed a good place to ask these questions, and to comment on the OP's considering an LCR or an SP-101. Regarding the LCR, while I don't own one, but have handled a few in stores/gun-shows, my impression is that it's a fine example of a pocket carry SD gun...light, great trigger pull, and very concealable. I have an LCR and I don't think the recoil is all that bad either.

I've just replaced my S&W 640 with a new 2 1/4" barrel spurless hammer SP101...About pocket carry, I must tell that there isn't a big difference between the two snubs, and I prefer the SP for some reasons. I carry my SP 99% of the time in my right front pocket, using an Uncle Mike's pocket holster or a De Santis "Nemesis". I generally wear 5.11 or Blackhawk pants.

Ok, I bought the gun; an SP101, 2 1/4" .357 with the spurless hammer. Here I am with the gun in pocket. I photographed myself right next to a window to get the light raking across the pocket from the side. There is no flash here to obliterate the form of the gun, so I think this can be considered a success. The gun prints when I sit down, but the holster takes care of the outline sufficiently. I think this will work fine for me. |

What one must ask themselves, is how fast can one get that in pocket pistol out of their pocket? Now can you do so 10 out of 10 times without a hangup? I am talking about loaded not empty, DRAW, FIRE and HIT TARGET less than 10 feet away from you??? NOW GENTS..........That is the real question! I hope your LCP does not JAM on you like our two JAMMED on us. Just the facts, no need to bring up recalls for this or that and why it happened. If your going to bet your LIFE on a frigging pistol, you owe it to yourselves and loved ones to choose the very best you can put in your hands. It is your choice simply put. DON'T BE A CHEAP-SKATE WITH YOUR LIFE OK. ![]() |

Tracer, you are right about pocket carry; it's slower to draw from a "zero" position - but an advantage is that you can put your hand on the gun without raising too much suspision. So, if you feel you are in a dicey situation, you can surreptitiously grab your gun and be ready to draw, thus speeding up your draw/fire time. This is especially true of revolvers because you can put your thumb behind the hammer (mine is bobbed) and ease the draw. Whenever it's convenient I plan to carry mine on my hip OWB. As for the LCP; that's another argument. |
