I've taken enhanced steps to protect my family... What are you all doing?

1) my situational awareness is at its peak
2) I carry everywhere and all the time (where not illegal)
3) I carry in the house... And I now keep a loaded firearm at bedside when I'm in bed... Not in the small safe... But accessible and in reach (no kiddos in my house anymore)
4) I lock the outside doors all the time
5) my wife asked me to teach her how to shoot and use a gun safely (she's thinking about a carry permit)

What are you all doing?
To be safe look at who is committing most of the crime today.
That should tell us that by putting a "Hillary" sign on your car, in your yard or on your door will keep those people away as one would assume that they will not commit crimes against their own kind.

Someone used the word "paranoid".

NOPE, not paranoid at all.

Its called "prepared".

I absolutely refuse to become a victim.

I can prevent that. So I do. Its that simple.

Some of you guys who feel the need to have a small arsenal with you at all times, or a gun within reach every second you are at home............should MOVE

No kidding. That "poke the bear" statement was just plain ignorance. It dont matter where you live anymore. Trouble can find you anywhere.

Druggies and criminals have been targeting rural folks around here the past few years. The more deserted & remote, the more they think they seem to think they can get away with it. Thats until they meet Mr. & Mrs. German Shepherd and Mr. 12 gauge.

I do everything the OP said, I just have the added security of some rather large German Shepherds that know darn well its their job to protect the homestead and all its occupants. I believe they really enjoy their work.

I'm too old to go cowboy into the living room with guns blazing in the middle of the night...we got no kiddies around and our home is "openly armed" in several key locations but our preference is a back room..it's sort of a "safe room" with some security features...always a charged cell phone and the security of knowing what weapons we have in there and how a bad guy would have to approach getting in there...we'd always have the upper hand on "surprise". Open or concealed carry is illegal in many parts of California including San Diego where I live but legal carry at home is always allowed (not in an open front yard). Whenever I'm in the garage I have a set to go Makarom 9x18 in my pocket..I've had several folks "walk in on me" selling stuff or pushing some church...I don't "pull on them" but we also are near the trolly line that serves Tijuana and anyone that looks (yes profiling) out of place needs to not walk up into my garage..he might get a serious surprise.

We'd rather beat a hasty retreat to a safe environment and hunker down in there while LEO comes....we are close to a PD station and a Fire station...I think in our case we'd probably make a 911 fire call because we'd have a truck and emt ambulance within a couple of minutes with sirens blaring..been told that is the quickest way to get the bad guys running cause they don't know who's playing the siren...then call the cops.

Kind of like the old business about if a woman is attacked...she should yell fire as loud as she can sceam and keep yelling fire!! If she yells rape people will not want to be involved but if they yell fire everyone comes out to see and help.

No, it's not ignorance, it's fact. Not every area of the country has been transported into a "war zone" or areas where you feel the need to be armed 24/7. How do I know? because I live in one. People look out for each other and their property where I live. There hasn't been any violence or even a break in around here in I can't remember when. I have accidentally left my house unlocked or garage doors open for a couple days at a time........Now, COULD something bad happen here? well certainly it could. Same as I COULD be struck by lightning, but neither has happened yet. I do have weapons in various places around my house, but I just don't feel the need to have one in my hand, on my person or my vehicle outfitted like an urban assault vehicle at all times

Moving isn't just a matter of the amount of crime, or the local gun laws. There is a matter of one's career, spouse's career, nearby relatives and depending on your circumstances many other factors.

I'm certainly not going to move just because some fool on the Internet thinks it makes a snappy line.

The fact is the safety issue can be significantly mitigated with superior firepower. That's actually cheaper than all the costs involved in moving to another state.

I'm afraid you may be fooling yourself. I, too, live in a rural area in s.w. GA and was lulled into that false sense of security until 2 years ago. Two men forced themselves into my closest neighbors home, tied the woman up and ransacked her home. The stress of the situation caused the victim (an 88 year old woman who lived alone) to go into cardiac arrest and she later died as a result. I am no longer fooled into thinking that "it won't happen here"

I didn't say it WON'T or CAN'T happen here, my response was to the original post which asked and I am paraphrasing here.......in light of recent events, what have YOU done. My answer was simply nothing, because nothing in MY area has changed. My other comment was directed to guys who maybe live in areas that have BECOME a real problem, or you fear for your safety.......well maybe you should move.

And you can call it being prepared, or however you want to say it, but in light of recent things, if you have found the need to carry more firepower, put a shotgun in your car, or have a weapon in your hands at all times while even at home.......that's a form of fear. You FEAR something bad may happen, so you are attempting to be prepared for it.

So in my case, it's not that I do nothing, or think nothing can ever happen here........it's just that I haven't felt the need to change my LEVEL of concern for my safety or my families

I also realize that not everyone who lives in a bad area can pick up and move..............but I also doubt many on the board live in the straight up "hood" either

excellent on all points

I live in rural area and in what I think is a relatively safe neighborhood. But we do most of our daily shopping about a mile away in a medium size strip mall with a Food Lion. I'll tell you --- many of the hombres that frequent that area look like hardened thugs. I never go there without carrying. I am in the process of training my wife and bought her what I think is the perfect CC gun for her -- a Sig P238. Has absolutely the easiest slide to rack that there is.

If these thugs are here in my area -- I think they have infiltrated the whole country.

Well, DB, we are finally in complete agreement! I live relatively close to Chicago, (at 40 miles) and it has spilled out here - so my Px4 Storm is a nice backup to awareness. My lil TCP and my 709 are getting deeper into deep concealment!

I'd carry the new Ruger SR9E, but it's a lot harder to hide ---- butttttt, I sure love it!

I have made up my mind to carry all the time - even in the house, so I don't forget it when I should have had it!

edit: reminds me- I gotta go swap guns out!
