smokeless powder, black powder equivalent

Just wondering if there is a conversion table or formula to convert a black powder load to use smokeless powder. Example is the 45-70, most modern ammo is loaded with the old trapdoors in mind. I have a 38-90 highwall that I was looking for brass for and for someone who's ever shot the cartridge. In my research I found that a charge of 90 grains of Fg blackpowder was the original factory loading. And "Cartridges of the World" notes the use of 21 grs. of IMR 4198 for about 1,350 fps. If I ever get some brass made I'll give it a try but wondered how they came to the conclusion that 21 grains of IMR 4198 will work. I would think its a matter that this many grains of a smokeless powder makes this much pressure compared to that many grains of Fg make this much pressure? Just wondered, many old guns and cartridges were converted back in the day, and would a chart or table is out there?

P.S. its raining and I'm stuck in the house but I do want to know

weldermyass, There's no such thing as a conversion formula from black powder to smokeless. Here's how smokeless powder loads come about ... the factory black powder load is tested for chamber pressure and velocity. Then a smokeless powder charge is worked up until chamber pressure and velocity are about the same. The size of the case, weight and diameter of the bullet, and of course the type of smokeless powder used will all have an impact on velocity and chamber pressure. Basically you have to depend on reloading manuals where the publishers have pressure testing equipment and chronographs to actually test each different load.

the topic by itself made me pucker! Not that he needs my help, but Iowegan is spot on! Any little change makes a big difference. You can not out think this stuff. Use what Publishers say is good. Not what US retards say is good. Just because I get away with doing something stupid doesn't mean it will work out for you. Fingers and eyes don't grow back. Getting to used all those blue parking spots isn't all that its cracked up to be.

Relax there M Phil, Iowegan gave the answer I was looking for. I wanted to know how its figured. COTW is a respected publication as are The Old Ideal catalogs. I'll close the thread.
