Ruger Old Army - serial number puzzle

Hi all.

I am new to this forum, thanks for adding me.

I have a question about Ruger Old Army serial numbers, and would appreciate any help or feedback. In 1993 I bought a brand new in box Ruger Old Army in stainless, which I still have. Although a very fun revolver to shoot, I only managed to fire through it some 3-400 balls before work and family commitments forced me to put the shooting hobby on the shelf (or more correctly in the safe ).

I am now so fortunate to be able to pick up shooting as a hobby again, and have found the box with the old ROA to lube it up and prepare it for shooting. I also checked the Ruger website, to find out that they don't make the anymore. When I checked the serial number on mine (145-37160) I was puzzled to see that Rugers website said it was manufactured in 1982. Strange since I bought it new from a dealer here in Norway in 1993. I still have the receipt, original box, plastic Ruger bag, nipple tool and owners manual.

I contacted Ruger support by e-mail and asked about my serial number manufacture date, and got a short reply from them saying 'Manufactured in 1982'.

How could this be? I find it unlikely that Ruger would have had this particular revolver laying around for 11 years? Also the owners manual is printed in 1989, which is also a bit strange. I am quite sure the dealer didn't have it stored either, at least not for 11 years.

Could someone offer an explanation for this?

Regards,
Michael

It's not that uncommon to find NOS (new old stock) floating around. Sometimes they get set aside at a distributor or at a dealer or even at the factory. Then they eventually get flushed out and show up on a dealer's shelf and end up in private hands. With your location being in Norway perhaps there's even more opportunity for an item to get set aside somehow in the distribution channel. At any rate I would accept the manufacture date of 1982 as stated and you'll likely never know why or how it took 11 years to show up at your local dealer. Nice looking piece - enjoy!

Welcome to the forum.

My best guess is that your ROA was made in 82, and in stock for 11 years.

In the late 80s/early 9os, I worked in a gun shop. We had a #1 in .218Bee that sat on the shelf for over 7 years! After I had left for other employment and could afford that #1 I went back to buy it myself. Well, you guessed it; someone had purchased it the day I stopped in to buy it!

Keep us posted. Those ROAs are a hoot to shoot!
