Start with a 20 grain load and work up
Mine shoots 25 gr perfectly and I can load it to 30 gr but I have to mash it pretty hard to compress the powder.
A steel frame 1851 is a good choice.
You should get a lifetime of good service from that pistol.

I have several BP guns... 25 I believe in total... includin' two Ruger Old Armies.

In mine, I use #11 caps, and for wad, I use cream of wheat instead. I use the yellow plastic Lee scoops instead of a powder measure (I do have one). Have been for years. Same of course with my ROAs. Not 'traditional' but it works. I use .454 ball for 1851, and my other .44 BP revolvers. .457 for Rugers of course. That said, I remember mine shot quite high out of the box.
