I've had this happen to me with other on-line retailers. Order goes all the way through until it is ready to be packed, then they find out they are out. "Missed it by THAT much"

Fix the situation. Remove yourself from Illinois - THAT is the true problem at hand here.

I did, and it did wonders for my stress, health & wallet.

I've never had to call customer service at Cabelas. The in store and online purchases have been great. Returns to the store were handled with no questions asked.

i've had similar problems with both Cabelas and Gander. The issue is they do not mark the item as sold until the process is complete. So while you are talking to the person, explaining that you live in IL and just want to order your %^#$ ammo, the online shoppers fill their baskets.

your order number was generated because the item was in-stock when you called, but their system did not double-check the availability before completing the sale. Blame it on technology.

I also prefer other online retailers.

I suspect that you are right. We can blame it on the system but if Cabelas was really interested in customer service they would invest in a better system that reflects their current inventory and eliminate the extra (2 day) delay that they need to verify that Illinois residents have complied with the law. They take the most restrictive Illinois laws, used in Chicago, and apply them to the entire state for ammo purchases. I'll spend my money at my local Gander Mountain and Dick's sporting goods. They employ local people and help the local economy. I picked up some CCI Mini-Mags today at Dick's.
Great store with great customer service. Have fun and safe shooting...

Never dealt with Cabelas but I have been well satisfied with Midway.

PS: When ever someone call Customer Service, they never know that an item is up for sale that's listed on the chart. More than likely they canceled the order because, to them, the item isn't available. I've heard this happening to others. When you sometimes see a note on an item not being available on the Internet, but to call C S to order one, C S has no clue that it is listed on the chart. DO NOT GET THEM INVOLVED unless you WANT the order canceled.
Last May I tried ordering some Winchester M-22s online. As another poster mentioned, Cabela’s was having some computer problems and I couldn’t tell if my order went through or not. To make a long story, I clicked the send order to Cabela’s twice more because nothing was showing up on my order history file. An hour or so later, their order history shows that I now have 3 orders in process for the M-22 ammo. So I phone Cabela’s customer service and explain what I did and asked them to please cancel the last two orders. After a few minutes on the phone, the lady tells me everything is taken care of and they only have me down for one order now. A few minutes later I receive an email with an order number and expected delivery date for one box…all seemed good to go and I was a happy camper. But, the next day, my orders history file showed that all 3 of my orders are canceled. I call customer again and ask them why they canceled the order I had received the email confirmation for. All she had to say was that they had a computer glitch and that ammo is now oos. I’m betting that if I wouldn’t have called customer service the FIRST time, I may have gotten all 3 orders…but probably 1 for sure.

BTW, this has been the only problem I've had with Cabela's out of 50+ online orders in the last 6 months.

Yep. You probably would have received at least one. The others might have been canceled if you have been caught before with ordering more than 1 per day. Otherwise Cabelas probably would have missed it and they would have gone on Backorder. As I mentioned, mine were on backorder for two weeks before being shipped.

Oh boy. I just posted saying if you wanted to put a 2100 can on backorder, use the link below. I deleted the link because I was afraid anyone could order ON MY ACCOUNT. I don't think this could happen, but I was concerned as when clicking on the link, it automatically put it into my cart. Now this COULD be a tool like the "chart", if you could change the ID numbers to what you want to buy. I'll have to look at this more closely. I did put two buy two cans and both are on backorder. No problem for me as they don't charge the credit card until shipped, and I'm in no hurry for them. If they cancel them, no big loss. The link comes from the S&W forum that I closely watch. Let me know what you guys think. I hope I don't get in trouble posting another forum's link. If so, I'm sorry and it won't happen again.

My order was just changed from "backordered" to "in stock" with a ship date of 10/3. Now what?

It worked for me too. I just checked my order that I placed 20 minutes ago and it was changed from Backordered to In-Stock. Nice looking out! Appreciate it!
