You leave out 1 small fact. It's surplus ammo with no guarantee of working.

Plus the fact you have to be set up with the CMP to begin with.If you aren't then you have to fill out paperwork to get approved for Guns and Ammo purchases...

Thanks TinsleyC for the link clarification.

Sorry guys if I mislead you on this site. Saw that they had .22 available- just wanted to share another site that had ammo.
For those out there that can get their paperwork approved, it appears that the Civilian Marksmanship Program could be a good source for guns and ammo.

I bought 5000 rounds of this last summer where the CMP was in Phoenix. (saved the freight) Packaged in 500 round boxes holding ten 50 round boxes. Very clean and works very well in my 10-22 and .22 Benardelli hand guns. This is standard vilocity and shoots a bit lower on the target than high vilocity loads but it is accurate and powerful enough to work the actions of my guns.
I'll be ordering more.

I fired and liked Aguila's 30 grain high velocity ammo as much as any 11 year old would have at the time I got them. They were for Christmas from my uncle so I shot them. They shot pretty well but there wasn't really too much of a use for a 30 grain solid point .22lr.

I refuse to shoot Aguila. I've seen way too many posts on other forums talking about guns exploding and the common variable in many of them was Aguila ammo. Very recently there was a thread about a guy who's gun exploded and the cause was Aguila ammo loaded way hotter than specified. They agreed to buy him a replacement gun but he'll never shoot that stuff again and neither will I. Obviously it's not all bad but who wants to be the one who gets a box of hot loads?

Fragmented Super Max hyper Velocity Previous post

Long post and I included a little background on me for reference. Thoughts please.
We shot 46 rounds of Aguila Super Maximum Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 30 Grain Hyper Velocity Plated Lead Hollow Point out of our 10/22 carbine and had two rounds splinter and fragment. Fragments came out of the barrel and ejection port as the bolt came back. Although at the time we did not know that. The first one that fragmented caught me in the stomach with a small piece of lead and I thought I had been hit by hot brass, but that did not seem right to me at the time. But I could not think of anything else. I was standing to the rear and slightly to the right side of the shooter (my young son). I keep this position to help him with any problems he may have while shooting. And have held this position for thousands of rounds and many different loads and brands of 22lr out of this rifle. Later when the second one fragmented a piece caught me in the right arm by the elbow and a piece ricocheted off the wall and caught the shooter in the leg. The second time I instantly knew I had caught a small piece of frag as it was still stuck in my arm and I had to dig it out. Real good case for wearing safety glasses! The first fragmentation we were shooting at reactive paddles, but on the second one we were shooting splatter targets and when we pulled it in to our station we could see small slits (rather than the typical round holes) cut into it from the high velocity low angle fragments.
About me: 28 years in the Air Force. Associate of applied science degree in military munitions systems (AMMO). I supplied, inspected, rejected or accepted and issued every piece of ammo (small arms up to 40mm) that was used on AF bases. I did this with millions and millions of rounds during my career. I also built a lot of bombs and missiles but that is not part of this story.
I shot expert in rifle and handgun for 28 years and have the marksmanship ribbon with a bronze star to prove it. Because of my job we were often armed and constantly trained and qualifying at the firing range. I fought in Operations Desert Shield/Strom, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan)
We clean and lube our weapons as soon as we get home from the range. We do not put dirty weapons back into storage. During inspection and cleaning of the 10/22 I noticed the cocking handle guide rod had a slight bend in it about 1/8th inch from the cocking handle end of the guide rod. We took the weapon completely down and did not see any other damage. The damage to the guide rod is minor and the bolt still cycles fine. We ordered a new assembly from Ruger and will not put the rifle back into service until we replace the entire assembly. I also inspected the remaining Aquila ammo and did not see any physical defects. But I did notice that this round had a slightly longer cartridge case than the Winchester super x HP, and CCI standard velocity RN I compared it too. Over all the complete rounds were the same lengths. Remember I am highly trained for small arms inspections. I have three lots of this ammo in hand and I pulled the one lot that fragmented and we will destroy it. We will try the other two lots with caution and not against a right side barricade where it can ricochet and catch the shooter. I read the ballistic reports for rounds that Ruger tested out of this rifle and saw that they had fired this round too, and took that to mean this rifle could handle that round. I know this could just be a bad/defective lot, but those frags hurt and left bruises too
