.44 Ammunition - What's your favorite?

Hello everyone. One topic that doesn't seem touched on too much is ammunition.

So...

What are your favorite hand loads and what are your favorite factory loads for your .44's?

I'll start out. Presently not hand loading, but for factory loads, I like Hornady 180gr. XTP and Winchester 240gr. soft point for routine use. For special loads, I am rather fond of Barnes 225 gr. and heavy Corbon loads.

American Eagle or Federal 240gr. It's the strongest factory ammo out there and at $20 a box hard to beat

If I were to be hunting White Tails I would probably use a Remington 180gr. Anything bigger a 270gr. + Hard Cast by Buffalo Bore or one of the other heavy hitters.

240 SWC from laser cast over 19.6 of AA#9, haven't used factory loads at all in this one.

We only buy factory ammo...Most of our 44 Magnum stuff is Mag-Tech 240 gr SJSP. Wife is punching 2-3 inch groups easily at 80 yards in her Hog Hunt practice sessions. I have some other brands around, but it is stuff received from other folks, not what we have purchased.

I used Speer 225gr half jacket hollow point & h110 they quit making them & I'm down to my last 100 of them so I gotta figure out another load. also have a 300gr XTP & Blue dot load thats really good in my Bisley. Other wise I use 240gr soft point or hollow points & h110 or 296.

Love that Winchester 240 SJSP if it comes down to factory ammo! Got some good pop to it and has worked great on deer in the past.
Our .44's have only had a few boxes of jacketed through them though and even fewer factory rounds. My practice load, everyday working round, and not a bad game getter either is 9.5 gr of Unique and a 240 cast SWC in mixed brass. I have taken one deer with that load as well as being a good mid range practice load. My regular hunting load is 9.5 of Unique under a 250 gr Keith 429421 boolit for deer and antelope sized game. I really find that cast boolits do well on any and all game if weight, meplat, hardness and velocity are correct for the critter, no need for higher pressure and cost from a jacketed round.

Thats the load I use in my 45 Colts 9.5 Unique & 250gr lead bullets pistol is a Blackhawk Rifle a Rossi. I stick with jacketed bullets in 44mag Marlin & Browning because of micro groove rifling that same load in 44 works good in Bisley though.

I shoot my sbh with 9.0 grains of unique and either a 240 grain swc or a 300 grain swc for longer range or bigger critters. I sometimes use Buffalo bore's 300 grain swc load.

I have been shooting a lot of Hornady 225 gr FTX LEVERevolution lately for the flatter trajectory.

I reload with H-110-23.5gr[24.0 max] or 2400-20.5gr[21.0 max],240gr Rem JSP or JHP,have some 210gr bullets too, some loads with Unique. Usually stay with 240's and the H-110 or 2400 loads.

I've always been happy with what I get from this guy:

Click here: Underwood Ammo - 44 Special

As you can see there're several different selections too. He also offers .44 Mag selections, if that's your favorite flavor .44

I like Starline nickel plated brass, with a CCI 300 Primer. Then anywhere from 18.0-21.0 grains of 2400 with any number of the 240 gr bullets I have on top. I could shoot that load all day long between my Redhawk 5.5" and my Encore with a 12" barrel.

My accuracy/hunting load in both SBH and Marlin 1894 is this:

22gr H110
Hornady 265gr Interlock FP
WLRM Primer
Any case trimmed to length

This is below max for both guns in the Hornady #4 Manual

I have no preference for mass produced commercial ammo...

It's all mediocre at best...
