I never understood that either. I'm sure it's just because of slight price difference. I guess it adds up when buying in bulk.

I buy online because I can't get what I want locally. I also avoid a 9.75% sales tax. I don't have to use up $25 worth of gas. I don't think sitting in front of my computer drinking my coffee in my underwear is inconvenient.

I live near a Cabelas, Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart, etc, but sometimes I find better deals online that I can't find in those stores so if I'm going to save money I'll order it. Mostly I find myself buying ammo that's on sale only on the cabelas website and then I just have it shipped to their store for free. That way I get a really good price and I avoid any shipping and hazmat fee. Last year Cabelas had an online only deal of 7.62x39 ammo that was only $2.99 for a box of 20 so I stocked up because I knew I wouldn't see that price ever again. They also had an online sale on the Federal 375 round 22 LR ammo packs for $9.99 about a month ago so I stocked up on that too because that price works out to getting a 550 round bulk pack for $14. Another price you wont see again.

My LGS sells his stuff for pretty close to what on-line sells it for.

Obviously I buy there because there's no shipping (ammo is heavy). We don't have a sales tax in NH so that isn't part of the picture.

Always figure the cost of the ammo to be what the price to put it at your door step. Shipping cost vary from on-line store to another and is a profit maker too.

If driving to local dealer, figure your mileage cost at 50Cents per mile (minimum).

Reloading does cut the costs but it may take a while to get your ROI because the setup cost will realistically be $400 on up.

I feel that if you just plink maybe once a month then just buy it (but give the empties to some poor reloader).

My practice ammo is Winchester Winclean and it's hard to find at the local shops. So I buy 10 boxes online, get a discount and have it delivered to my door in 4-5 days. The shipping cost is equivalent to the sales tax if I bought locally that that's a wash.

Here in new jersey ammo is not cheap and not a lot of places to get it from. On sale at dicks it's like 13 bucks plus tax for 9mm and 17 bucks normal. On line I get in bulk for 9 bucks a box plus shipping. no way can you find a better deal here.

A few reasons for me. I have a Browning BAR and wanted to try different bullets to see what it shoots best. All I can find by me is a few different brands of 150 gr. so I hit the net. And, for "specialty stuff" like supersized 44 mag ammo that I would just like to shoot a few rounds here and there from Buffalo Bore and the like. Otherwise, I wait for the local sales of range ammo and buy what I can afford at the time to keep the habit strong.

I live near a Cabelas but I much prefer buying online from Palmetto State Armory in bulk. No sales tax and reasonable shipping. They have some of the best prices I've seen plus it's nice having that heavy little box delivered to my doorstep. Cheaperthandirt has some good sales, too and if it's good enough, I buy from them, too.

I've rarely been able to match online prices with the exception of birdshot at Cabelas. Last time there, they had 250 round boxes for $58.95. That's hard to beat especially after shipping.

I live remotely, and just can’t get what I need short of a 3 hour one way drive. It’s a no brainier for me to order online.

There’s a Bill somewhere in DC that is designed to ban online sales. That would suck.!

Fortunately, that one went down in flames. It was a rider attached to an Internet security bill. Go figure.

I buy locally or at gun shows ...and pay cash. I'm paranoid and IMO buying online leaves too much of a paper trail. OTOH, I have not seen many prices online that will beat gun shows.

I shop prices carefully and use 'free-shipping' specials to save those costs. Now and then I get a box of something out of the normal (444 marlin or 35 rem) when I happen across a rifle of that caliber. It is easier to 'let my fingers do the walking' and shop the supply houses on-line for those things. I just got 3150 rounds of CCI Blazer 22 LR ( 6 boxes of 525 rounds)for an even $110 delivered by UPS to my door. That will keep me in little bullets for awhile.

I may buy ammo at a gun show or auction, but I watch carefully what it is and what the price compares too at CTD or others online.

What inconvenience? A couple of mouse clicks and then UPS delivers it to my door.

I just placed a small order with Underwood ...
-357 magnum, 125 grain bonded, 1600fps @ $28.17/50
- 45LC, +P, 300 grain XTP JHP, 1300fps @ $39.24/50
- 45ACP +P, 230 grain bonded FMJ, 1000fps @ $28.08/50
shipping was $11.82 and, for my location, is 2nd business day.

Sure, that 45LC +P is not going to be @ 1300fps out of my barrel ... but I'm willing to bet that I'll feel it.

My LGS, by comparison (a very well-stocked independent), carries only cowboy load 45LC and Remington R45C, a 250 grain LRN.

I buy Fiocchi .357M @ Midway and bulk 9mm and .380ACP @ SGAmmo. Shipping from both to me is about $12/order and arrives in 2-3 days. Cost with shipping is within pennies of generic loads @ WalMart.

I do buy my share of ammo @ WalMart, but that's just to put metal downrange. If I want a specialty load (hot, heavy, engineered bullet) to play with or a thousand rounds of quality .380ACP, it's going to be an online deal.
