The only time I've ever had .22s shipped to me was one time when Cabela's had Federal bulk packs on sale at a really nice price and they offered 50 cent shipping. For 50 cents I was happy to let them UPS me 28 pounds of ammo rather than drive.

Because I load I don' t buy much ammo...once in a while I do and then I often will buy on line...We have several "big box" type stores here and I don't save a whole lot buying on line but frankly I got pretty angry in 08 when the retailers ran up the prices on about everything during the "shortage"...I personally saw a manager from a local shop at WalMart buying ammo (they had it in a box below the counter) to take back to his shop to resell...haven't been in his store since and I don't like to shop Walmart.
I buy my reloading supplies on line in conjunction with other folks...we split the hazmat and whatever shipping might be involved...costs about the same as local and don't have to fight the "we're out but check next week"...and especially on powders that are a little "unusual".

I buy ammo online and have it shipped to the store for free so that I can get exactly what I want, in the amount that I want. Everyone has their particular favorites and those favorites are not always available in a local store.

| Exactly!! Just take a look at one caliber, say 44 magnum. And now look at all the different packaging amounts 100, 50, 25, 20 rounds per box and the different manufacturers. And finally the different bullets and loading's with each bullet. They'd need a whole wall just for that one caliber if they wanted to cater to each and every 44 magnum shooter out there. Most mom and pop places will only have one manufacturer and of that just one loading of a caliber like 44 magnum, or maybe two. No local shop can provide the variety that is offered on line. Smithy.

Right now I'm buying ammo at stores. I don't reload and I haven't tried buying on-line yet. I've looked at some ammo sites to get an idea of what the process is but that's it. I'm planning to become more serious with the on-line options as the one large retail store along with the two LGS's in my my home town that sell ammo are very inconsistent with their inventories.
Their prices are not all that bad, however, you cannot count on them having what you need every time you need it. I'm not shooting any exotic cartridges, just .45 LC, .357 Mag, 38 Spl., .22 Mag & .22LR. Sometimes they'll have the round(s) and quantities I'm looking for and sometimes not. This causes me to travel 35 miles to the next bigger town which has more of a selection of shopping resources. It's frustrating!
So I am turning to on-line ordering in the near future as the reliable supplier, as well as, keeping a look out at the local stores and LGS's. By reading this thread I see there's quite a bunch of decent places to look into for on-line purchases, thanks to you folks!
Thanks for letting me vent! |

I buy 9x18 Makarov online for my CZ82. It is either 14.00 or so for shipping or pay 9% tax plus gas for about 100 miles.

Smithy. | I sent in my own brass and some I had picked up at the range. As long as it's not dented or corroded and it's the same caliber as what they reload it's OK.

Some ammo I am forced to buy online. It has been years since I have found .50 AE, .325WSM, or .458 Lott in a local store.

Cheaper than Dirt, for sure!
Just be sure to only order from the same warehouse location. Shipping charges are based on the warehouse your order is pulled from.
Our local Walmarts don't carry the "dangerous" ammo!
Only FMJ target rounds and no Magnums.

Only FMJ target rounds and no Magnums. | That's no lie about CTD. The first time I put together an order from them, when I calculated the shipping I figured it would be cheaper just to drive down to Texas and pick it up myself! They do have a good selection though.

| Internet Purchases are convenient
First--Semper Fi--from a retired Marine--served 1966-1989----
I purchase most of my ammo on line---usually find good deals with fast service--and low prices when buying large quantities. I shoot at least 400 rounds a month of 9mm and another 200 of 22cal--recently bout 1000 rounds of Magtech 124 gr 9mm FMJ for $190 with $14 shipping arriving in 4 days

Semper Fi.
I like to support my LGS but like others have said prices and selection online are often much better. And, the cost of gas to drive to there is a factor.
Now if they start taxing online sales that may change things....

Just wondering... | What inconvenience???
The prices are really not that much different.
What is different is that I don't have to spend 2 hours driving there and back and waste money on gas and time.
Then when I get there they don't have it. "Oh I'm sorry we just sold the last box".
I call up whomever I want, order my ammo, bullets, casings, whatever and just like magic it shows up on my front porch 4 days later.
If that is inconvenience I would like to see a real problem. |

I buy ammunition on-line when I can't find a specific load locally. For example, none of the local gun shops stock Buffalo Bore, so I buy it - when I buy it - on-line.
However, if I can get it locally, I do. Part of that is because I want to keep my local gun shops in business, but part of it is because shipping eats up any savings unless I'm buying in massive amounts - which I can also do locally.
[Note: my state - Oregon - doesn't have sales tax, so I have about 9% less motivation to buy on-line than people in neighboring states.]
