| If you had to choose 3
I want to start by saying if you think this is stupid or don't like the choice I made for my self you don't have to play.
This isn't meant to be caliber war. I am just curious of what others would choose. The Game
A friend of mine and I decided we where both getting caught up in wanting too many guns. So we each picked 3 calibers and will stick within those boundries. Because lets face it there are to many cool guns to have them all. I would have to be Donald Trump or Bill Gates to get everything on my wish list.
So we each picked 3 - 1 plinker round/ 1 Handgun round/ 1 Rifle Round. It has made things interesting. My choices
1. 22lr - cheap prevelant fun and good sruvival round
2. .357/.38 - I love wheel guns and lever actions.
3. .223 - I am not a hunter (just because of time restraints right now) but I like long range shooting (well long range for the North East) So if you had to pick 3 What would your choices be and why?
PS I consider .357/.38 together because they can be fired form the same gun. Same goes for 44mag and 44spcl you get the idea

1: .22lr - nothing cheaper or easier to shoot or use
2: .357 - the do-all handgun round
3: .308 - the do-all rifle round

Can't argue with those.
Toss in a 12-ga shotgun and you'd have a pretty well-rounded battery. |

3: .308 - the do-all rifle round | I can agree with those. I only have the first two now, no real need for a centerfire rifle.
If this was for a "stuff hits the fan" situation, I might choose military rounds since they would be easier to find and "pilfer" over the long haul.

agreed bearcatter...3 is a difficult pick. it was a toss up between the .357/.38 and the 9mm....and id feel naked without a .223 and a 12ga

I choose
1) 22LR - cheap practice, useful small game
2) 9mm - cheap overall, very available.
3) 7.62x39 - cheap options available, good power, suitable for small and larger game.
and
4) 12GA including 3.5" shells - use it for almost anything.

| I've been playing the try to buy all the cool guns too long (30+ years) If I have to narrow it down to just 3 calibers, I'm gonna have some disposable funds for ammo and accessories.
I'll Keep my 10mms and 44 mags and for rifle I'll take my 308s.
If I get to keep my 44 specials too then I'd have pistols well covered. If not I'd need a couple more Mags a couple short bbl Blackhawks, a 4 5/8" sts and maybe one of the shorter talos and a Smith 629 Backpacker.

Like you I want them all, but that is not really wise or cheap. I have far more than three guns but if I had to keep only three I would choose:
1. 16 guage shotgun........great light small game gun more versital than a 22
2. Taurus Judge 45/410....You have a large caliber and 410 buck shot to stop just about anything that can harm you.
3. SKS or AK47................Much less expensive than a AR15, same fire power, ammunition cheap, and if you ever have to defend yourself, or for large game you have a long rifle round.

1. .22lr
2. .357/.38
3. 5.56/.223
I wish I could choose 4 calibers 'cause I'd add a 12 ga to the list!

I have a lot more than three guns I am just keeping my purchases to those 3 calibers. I do have one 1911 in 45acp but that was bought before I made this decision. so I might be cheating a little.

22LR, 9MM, and 12 gauge. I have owned a MkII for twenty nine years and simply love that pistol. I have my Father's 20 gauge and 12 gauge shotguns so that makes 12 gauge easy. And my wife let me have her LC9 when she decided it was too much for her. She went with a sig 380. so there we go, I'm covered: plinking ,carry, and home defense.
What a fun thread! Good info too.

.22lr/mag. a single action that handles both. single 6
.38/.357 can be used for hunting to a point
.223.5.56 a good round I have carried many times in the Air Force and can use effectively enough.
Being a smooth-bore a 12gage Remington 870 with a police barrel can be added to the list.
