Tul Ammo

I have a P97 45acp and am planning to get a SR1911. I bought a couple of boxes of the Tul Ammo at walmart and than read a thread that said they would not shoot in their SR1911. I was wondering if that was true for all 45acps or just the Ruger? Can anyone shed a little light on this that have tried this ammo?

Thanks
FES

Well, I've never shot any Tulammo, and I don't own a .45. What I do know is that Tulammo is generally steel cased. Steel cases don't expand when fired like softer brass and aluminum cases do. This means you get more blowback around the case and stuff accumulates in the chamber.

If the steel cased stuff was dirt cheap, I might consider it and just be careful not to shoot brass/aluminum cased stuff through, until I had done a thorough cleaning. Steel cases have got to be hard on extractors too. Since I can get decent ammo for around the same price, I avoid it. YMMV

TulAmmo has a reputation for bad performance in semi-autos
in several different calibers on many different gun forums.....
Conclusion I see is it IS NOT a specific caliber
and NOT a specific gun.
Best advice is get a box and try it.
I only shoot TulAmmo in .223 in a mini-14 and it works fine.

A lot of time the primers are hard and you'll get light strikes from what I have seen

I won't shoot any combloc ammo. Too many issues. Further, why spend large dollars on a really nice gun then shoot the cheapest crap you find?

For me, reloading is the way to save money on ammo and not risk the gun or have hoaky issues.

I don't save any money on reloading......not up front,
but probably over time.....maybe.
Can't say I've noticed a difference $$$$$ over 35yrs.
My latest press [Dillon 550B]....I walked in for a $429 press
and left with paying $925 and it takes a few boxes of shelf
ammo to just break even...BUT.....my reasons are simple:
Make an accurate round for any/each gun I shoot,
AND I KNOW what's inside.....and I always have the ammo
I like to shoot.

The TulAmmo problems I see most are feeding issues
and ejection issues[brass hangs in chamber].

Tul Ammo is a cheap alternative to brass ammo. I've used it in many semi auto's without issue but I wouldn't say it will work in all semi auto's. I have an FNH-FNP-45 Tac that won't function reliably with Tul Ammo or Winchester WWB. While it may work fine in one SR-1911 it may fail miserably in another. Ammo sensitivity does exist in certain firearms, you'll often read/hear of "fussiness" when it comes to certain ammo in certain weapons. These folks aren't exaggerating, I personally have experienced ammo sensitivity in several of my modern firearms mostly with WWB. Steel cased ammo is generally known for it's lack of fire forming to certain chambers and that's where you'll encounter problems, Id say give it a try and see how it goes, you may be surprised that it functions adequately, on the other hand you may experience ejection issues, ignition issues and even accuracy problems. Point is, you won't really know for sure until you try it in your weapon for yourself. If I'm not shooting my own handloads I'll usually be shooting Federal American Eagle, I buy them in bulk because they use high quality reloadable brass and are manufactured with consistancy and premium components.

just because some guy in some thread had issues with ammo doesn't mean its an across the board problem. it shoots fine--shoot away

I've never had a problem with Tula, Ulyanovsk, Herters or Wolf. That's all I use in my WASR-10. I've also used lots of it in my Hi-Points w/o any problems and occasionally in some of my other guns. .30 carbine from Herter's works great and it's significantly cheaper than brass. I'll admit though that I stay away from it in my Kimber. Has anyone heard of any problems with extractors, etc. from using steel ammo? I notice Hornady has a steel match line out now.

Why not just buy brass ammo? If cost is that big of a factor pick up the brass and recycle at $1.40/lb. It seems that would offset the cost of using steel.
