I have applied for my CPL and am ready to purchase self defense ammo for my SR 40. I am interested in the Hornaday ammo especially the Critical Defense. Has any one used it in a SR 40? Does it chamber well? I would like to know.

But, I do not have a SR 40; I use a revolver.

I have critical defense for my SR40c. I haven't shot much of it cause it's like $.080 a shot. But I have NO problems with it. Hear nothing but good things about it. I'll probably get skolded for this but I practice with federal, go home and load it with hornady. I dont practice with it. I can't afford to. That's the only drawback.

I would think it would be ok. I use Remington Golden Sabre in my CCW .40 but practice with WWB stuff in the same weight to keep the recoil similar to make the practice as realistic as I can.

Works well in my XD40. The only weapon I have that it does not work well in is my Remington 1911 r1 which likes the 230 gr rounds. Everything else I use "Critical Defense" in and I highly recommend it.

Everyone on this forum thinks Critical Defense is the best thing ever, so you're going to get that suggested to you. Might as well just hop on the wagon and get some.

I use Critical Defense in my carry gun. Great round and feel very comfortable carrying it.

Runs great in my LCP, LC9, and SR9C. I am using the Hornaday with the red inserts. Not sure which version they are.

Speer Gold Dot is good stuff, too. Excellent expansion, as good as Hornady, but same cost unless you catch a sale. Midway carries many brands of PD ammo.

Go ahead and use the Crapitcal Defects, if you really want to. But I suggest you look here first. Could be a real eye-opener for those that tend to listen to marketing gimmicks vs actual tests Best Ammo for Self Defense |

Thanks for your input. I am looking for the best self defense ammo. I found a place call Optimized Ammunition in Barryton, Mi. They hand load with high quality components. Plus they sell 50 rounds JHP 180 grain for $27 So I think I'll try them first.

I think you should use the ammo that gives you the best accuracy. With my P94 in 40 S&W that is the old Winchester 155gr Silvertip HP. I handload so I load 155 gr's for practice and use the above for SD. I personally think any decent HP will work for SD in a 40. The highly expensive, super critical XYZ ammo was developed as a result of trying to make an underpowered smaller cartridge effective. With a 40 I don't think that is an issue.
