9mm Parabellum has more letters, other than that they are both the same as 9x19 ammo.

All the same, it was first developed for the Luger pistol by the germans, also known as the Pistole Parabellum. The phrase parabellum translates to "for war" or "prepare for war". And since they are on the metric system, the official caliber is 9x19. Anytime I heard the term 9mm you can safetly assume that it is this 9x19 since it is one of, if not the most popular caliber in use, and this is why ammo is so cheap for it specifically and why even .380 which is a 9mm short can be more in ammo cost than its longer, more popular brother that takes up slightly more material.

Man lets hope the gun grabbers don't know the meaning of parabellum they might really push to get the 9mm band. They would automatically interpret it as anyone the shoots 9mm is a war monger.

Not to be confused with the 9mm Makarov round. 9 x 18

RdHwk45Colt is an unknown quantity at this point
9x17mm = 9mm kurz = 9mm corto = .380 A.C.P.
9x18mm = 9mm Makarov, which is not a true 9mm, miking out closer to 9.2mm bore
9x19mm = 9mm Luger = 9mm Parabellum = 9mm NATO. The most common 9mm.
9x21mm = 9mm I.M.I., Israeli round for export where military rounds are banned.
9x23mm = 9mm Largo
9x23mm Winchester is a round based loosely on the Largo and .38 Super rounds, but which operates at higher pressures, and should NEVER be shot in pistols not specifically chambered for it.

The .38 Super is a true 9mm, originally manufactured as a semi-rimmed cartridge, but this may have changed over time

Parabellum is derived from the Latin saying si vis pacem, para bellum, meaning If you wish for peace, prepare for war.

The .380 is also known as 9mm Browning Court.

I once read that the Thompson SMGs were also made in .38 Super. Would THAT be a fun piece to shoot, or WHAT? <evil grin>

I really wish that there were more .357 mag autos or more .38 super guns. Seems like both have only been really used in 1911 frames.

RdHwk45Colt, The 38 Auto was a cartridge designed by JMB intended for a pistol later named the 1911. This cartridge shares the same case dimensions, bullet weight and diameter (9mm) with the 38 Super, but has a much lower operating pressure and lower velocity. There were some T-SMGs chambered for the 38 Auto but TTBOMK, not a 38 Super.

357 SIG is a 40 S&W case necked down to 9mm, the hottest of all commercial 9mm cartridges. Here's some not-so popular 9mms: 9 mm Bergmann-Bayard, 9 mm Browning Long, 9 mm FAR, 9 mm Federal, 9 mm Mauser, 9 mm Steyr, 9 mm Win.Mag, and 9 x 25 Dillon. There's more but I'm too lazy to look them up.
