.357 mag rat rounds

I was given a box PMC (bronze) .357 mag/125 grain jhp rounds.
How good are these as "rat rounds" of the two-legged variety and other vermin, I might run into around the house or out in the woods?
Gonna use them in stainless 6" barreled Security Six.

If they shoot well in your six then they should work fine. I prefer a heavier bullet but thats just my humble opinion and not based on anything other than my gut feelings. The price is right but if you plan to use for self defense I would want to shoot several boxes to be sure they were the ones.

Looks good

The 125gr hp .357 was the great equalizer in the day. Even the 45 acp looks anemic compared to the 125 gr .357. I am not sure the velocity will be the same in the Bronze, but couldn't hurt to try.

I had some problems (30+% misfire) with a box of PMC (.45 ACP) years back, so I've tended to shy away from them, probably for no reason - every ammunition maker has a bad day once in a while.

As was said above, the 125 grain JHP .357 magnum is/was considered to be the best self-defense loading for the caliber - it was what the police loaded in their .357 magnums, when they weren't hamstrung by their politically-correct bosses.

On the other hand, I'd have to say that it's a bit excessive for rats (Rattus spp.) and if you're shooting it inside the house, be prepared for the slug to go through any and all interior walls (and maybe some exterior walls, as well).

For vermin and snakes, I would use a shotshell in my GP-100.

For rats and snakes...I think I would rather use my ole trusty .22LR.

On the other hand, for 2-legged "rats"....those 125g .357 should definitely do the trick.

Good grade of ammo for plinking but for social work I'd want some higher quality, with a design dedicated dedicated to self defense.

Like the old biker said: "dime head? then buy a dime helmet".

125 jhp

I've shot plenty of coyotes with the 125 JHP out of a 357 magnum and it tends to be very effective on them. The larger pig I've shot with that bullet soaked up the punishment without much slowing down on body shot. Think you will be fine for normal critters but heavier is better as vermin body weight increases.
