Herter's Nylon Clad TNJ Ammo from Cabela's - Made in USA by CCI-Blazer

Last weekend I received a sale list email from Cabela's with some intriguing ammo on sale for some relatively low prices.

I purchased 200 rounds of each calibre (4 boxes of 50 each), 9mm. .40 S&W, and .45ACP.

The 9mm and .45 ammo just arrived late yesterday, and the .40 is on backorder with delivery predicted for next week. The boxes are marked "Herter's Select Grade - Aluminium Case" with a made in USA flag symbol, and a "Manufactured by Blazer" logo on the top-left corner of the box. On sale, this was some of the most inexpensive American made ammo that I have recently seen in these calibres in a long time. I had a free shipping coupon.

The headstamps all indicate the calibre, the "N R" (for non-reloadable), and the initials CCI (obviously CCI, the makers of the more traditional aluminum and brass cased Blazer).

The cases are identical to the traditional Blazer aluminum cases, but the bullets are clad in a blue nylon jacket rather than the traditional cupro-nickel jackets.

The few reviews on the Cabela's website are excellent for this ammo, with claims of perfect functioning with no failures to feed, fire, or eject.

I know that Cabela's bought the brand name "Herter's" from the bankrupt company several years ago, and CCI has a long tradition of manufacturing aluminum cased ammunition in various calibres.

Several years ago Federal made a "NyClad" (nylon jacketed) round, initially for the NYPD, to reduce lead emissions in indoor ranges, but the newly manufactured Herter's/CCI Blazer ammo blue nylon jackets look totally different from the old Federal NyClad rounds that I have.

The ammo was delivered by UPS last night, and I have not yet had a chance to take it to the range to try. I have fired numerous boxes of the classical aluminum cased Blazer is several pistols of different makes and calibre and always found it to function flawlessly.

Since I am aware that CCI and its sister company Speer are both owned by the same parent company that owns Federal, and Federal produced nylon jacked NyClad rounds several years ago, I can't help but feel that this is some new iteration of the old Federal NyClad rounds, and not a totally new product.

Has anyone yet been able to try this newly manufactured Herter's (Cabela's) blue nylon jacketed ammo yet? I filled some magazines in my P89, P93, LC9, and other .40 and .45 pistols to test for manual feeding and ejecting with these unusual bullets, and they all seemed to feed very smoothly as the nylon jackets are somewhat slick, and eject with no problems.

Here is how Cabela's describes these new rounds:

Herter's Select Grade TNJ Ammunition

Great performance at a value-minded price
Precision aircraft-grade aluminum cases
Total Nylon Jacket bullets eliminate copper fouling
Precision-made in the USA

By replacing costly brass cases and copper jackets with aluminum and nylon, USA-made Herterís aluminum-case handgun ammunition keeps cost down while preserving clean-shooting reliability and accuracy. Sized to incredibly precise tolerances, the nonreloadable, aircraft-grade aluminum cases cycle smoothly. Premium-quality round-nose lead bullets are coated with a Total Nylon Jacket (TNJ) to replace expensive copper jackets. TNJ bullets are inherently accurate, and cycle fluidly through semiautomatics. As an added benefit, TNJ bullets eliminate hard-to-remove copper and lead fouling. Made in USA.

Hey Texas Deputy, I live not far from the Cabelas in East Hartford Ct and I picked up 4 boxes of the Herters (CCI) TNJ's in .45 acp and fired all 200 rounds in my Armscor Rock Island Tactical Compact on Thursday and they fed & functioned flawlessly, accuracy was identical to the standard copper jacketed rounds. They are pretty much the same as the nyclad bullets, just a different color. I was pretty impressed with them at the range but I would like to see them come out in a brass (boxer primed) version so I can reload them. I was at Cabelas last night and they were sold out of the TNJ's in all but 9mm, so I picked up some Federal "Champion" 45's that are reloadable on sale for $14.99 which was an awesome deal. I can't comment on the clean running quality's of the TNJ's because I fired a total of 600 rounds that day, 400 of them were standard copper jacketed ammunition.

I posted a review of it in the "Range Report" Forum.
Worked very well in my LC9 9mm. Seemed very clean, no fouling at all after a 50 round inspection, just minor powder residue.

I believe they have a video on the Cabela's website also. I noticed a federal banner in the background. I noticed the Federal, Blazer Brass & the Herter TNJ ammo are boxed the same,
i.e. same size box & shell holder.

Herter's - Cabela's - CCI - TNJ ammo

I purchased several hundred rounds of this Herter's/Cabela's/CCI when it first came out a few months ago, and was on sale for less than Federal Valuepacks at Walmart.

I purchase 9mm, .40, and .45 and it all functioned flawlessly, was very accurate, and was surprisingly clean, with little powder staining and bore fouling.

I was very satisfied with it.

The individual boxes of 50 .40 S&W are not currently on sale, but available for $14.99. When i bought them earlier this year on sale, I believe that the .40 was $12.99/box (I also had a Cabela's coupon code and free shipping).

Cabela's: Herter's Select-Grade TNJ Handgun Ammunition

They currently have the DryBox of .40 on sale for $139.99 + $2 shipping (10 boxes, 500 rds). At $14/box that is only slightly more than the reloads I purchased from FreedomMunitions and JackRoss.

I am a product information associate at Cabela's and got a call the other day from a shooter. He very condescendingly told me we had a mistake in our catalog that said Herter's ammo was made in USA, and he KNOWS that NONE of the Herter's ammo is stateside, but ALL are made in European/Baltic countries. I agreed that MOST of it was made overseas, but what the catalog and page number is this mistake on and I'll check on it. Then had the pleasure of telling him that was Blazer ammo, and indeed MADE IN USA.

On the flip side, the ONLY time I had any problems with my Colt .380 Mk IV Model 80 was with older Blazer ammo; misfires, FTE, and smokestacking.

As for this ammo, I have not had the chance to try it out.

HICK:

Can you please post us here whenever that Herter's TNJ (made in USA) ammo is on sale again like it was earlier in the year?

I bought several hundred rounds of .45, .40, and 9mm when it was first introduced and on sale and it has been excellent!

Thanks!

Best I can say is keep an eye on it on the internet.

I do not know in advance when it goes on sale. Even if I did, I cannot (and would not) say. (I like my job and want to keep it! Where else do you get paid for talking about shooting & guns?!?!?!)

I can create a sensation by bringing a gun to work at the call center. But instead of a mad panic egress to the EXIT doors, they crowd around to see it!!

Does Cabela's have an exclusive distribution deal on this stuff?

I might want to pick some 9mm up the next time they have their 2 cent shipping deal but every time I visit the Cabela's website it's on back order.

Excellent!! Here is a product information question: What are the ballistics data on the 9mm TNJ? Or, where is the link on cabelas.com that provides this information?

Many thanks
