Hornaday 357 mag s&w ammo?????

A friend of mine needed some money so I bought some ammo from him. Mostly hornaday hollow points in 38 special and 357 magnum 125 and 148 grain. but he threw in 6- 357 magnum S&W hollow points. All he had was a revolver and i just wanted to know before I shoot them out of my SP 101 if there is a difference and why they mark them S&W other than the fact they are Smith and Wesson.

I bet it's just standard .357 Mag ammo. Check this webpage and measure the rounds to make sure. Ammo | .357 S&W Magnum | 1

They have to be factory loads because you can't change the head stamp as in completely replace it.

I have some range p/u 357 brass with S&W on it. Doesn't seem any different to me.

I don't know if there's a law about it, but if it says 357 Mag on the head stamp then that's what it is. Putting something in those cases that are outside the 357 specification would be a grave error that no one would take lightly.

It does say 357 magnum S&W. He said he shot them out of his tarus revolve and thats why he only had 6 left. I tried them in the SP last night and I cant tell any difference at all. Im going to get the micrometer out today and measure the casing or maybe not shoot them at all, will see.thanks for the link also. Im going there right now to see whats up.

WOW, thanks THE WALL for the link. Just went there and it is the S&W1 stamped on it and my friend did say he used that ammo to kill his deer with the 6" taurus he had. I guess I could save them for deer season. the good thing is I got 1 box of 125gr. ftx, 1 box of 125gr. xtp, 1 box of 140 gr.ftx and 6, 148 gr. S&W, 1 box of 38 special 125 gr. jhp/ xtp all Hornaday's and 1 full box of winchester 38 special fmj all for 40 bucks!! He sold his 2, 357 magnums cause he needed the money and bought a high point semi auto 40 cal. and needed some shells for it so he could shoot. I did shoot the hight point and I will never judge a gun till I shoot it. Its big and wide but 4 out of 5 shots not only hit the 3" circle but they all touched and 1 was in the same hole. the first shot was a hair low and left. Not bad for never picking up the gun before. this was at 25 ft.I know a lot of gun snobs say there junk but for 215 bucks out the door and a lifetime warranty plus 2 extra mags back for the inconvenience if it does go in for repair, just sayin.

The correct designation for the 'Three-Fifty-Seven' cartridge, is:

.357 S&W Magnum
