How much ammo do you keep on hand for self defense?

Just curious what other folks are doing as far as self defense ammo storage/inventory?
I have lots of target loads and such in an unlocked closet that I use for range practice. In addition, I have a gun safe that I keep my SD and PD ammo in (ie: SWCs, Hollow Points, Soft nose, etc)
How much SD ammo do you retain?
Do you secure it differently than your target ammo, like I do?
Why or why not?
The reasaon I keep SD ammo in the safe is to have the assurance that it is there, unmodified, not stonlen and known where it is located. I have about 500 rounds in the safe and about 2,000 rounds for target, normally.
Thoughts?

I don't have a difference in storage for FMJ or premium SD ammo. I try to have 1000 per caliber in my safe. So i own few 9mm, a few .223 etc and have 1000 for each cailber.
I like having enough ammo on hand so i can shoot and not have to buy expensive ammo while im out and so i have plenty if there is a temporary shortage. The vast majority is target ammo because the cost is too prohibitive to keep alot of the premium stuff around.

I don't reload. I stop and buy target rounds on pay days when I have extra cash and just keep one box of defense rounds around to keep them loaded at home. Got a SWEET deal a couple of years ago where a friend of a friend had a thousand rounds of 9mm Winchester target rounds he had gotten from work because they were returns! Guess the can't sell them if they are returned or something. Still have them cause I was stocked up on 9mm pretty well already. Bad thing is I don't shoot my 9 anymore. Gave it to pops to keep at their place when we started having a lot of home invasions and robberies in the area.

I have about 50 rounds of expensive SD stuff for each pistol caliber I shoot - .38/.357, .44 spec/.44 mag, .45 Colt/.45 acp. Have about 250 rounds of target ammo for each. Keeping an eye on prices and stock up when sales come along.

+1. That's about how I do it. I try to keep about 200-300 rounds of range ammo for each caliber & a couple boxes of premium HD rounds for each pistol. Right now I have two 9mm pistols, three .40's, & one .45acp so I try to keep a little more .40 on hand, when my wallet allows.

+1 thought I do keep about 1000 rnds. of 9mm for target shooting as both my wife and I shott this and it can go fast. I but it in bulk when on sale.I also keeep 1000+ rnds of .22lr as it cheap and goes fast when target shooting.

There is no such thing as too much ammo unless you are trying to figure how to make it all fit in your pockets.
