| 357 or 38+P GDHP?
I recently and mistakenly bought some Speer 135gr GDHP ammo in 357 for my SP101 thinking it was the 38+P 135 gr version. I have both and they are for the Short Barrel. Not having any velocity figures for the former, I assume is a fair amount higher than the 38+P version. Anyone ever tried these before? I expect a lot more recoil from the SP101 and may have to resort to the GP100 with the 357 load.

I've no specific experience with that round, but I have run many hot "Ruger Only" reloads through my 2.5" SP101 without issues. Most with 125 grain boolits. I wouldn't be concerned running any factory ammo through it.

The 357 GDSB are mid range loads. They're no problem out of a SP-101, at least for me. |

Only thing I can think of is that you will have a bigger fire ball out of the barrel.

Snuffy33 is right. The 357 Mag GDSB will only have slightly more velocity and slightly more recoil than the 38 Spec +P GDSB out of the SP101. |

It should be a real hummer in the GP100. At what they cost, I'll probably only shot one box.

I think the SP101 does well with 158gr 357 magnum factory loads. The 125gr factory magnum loads seem to sting a bit. I haven't come across anything uncomfortable in my GP100, though. let us know how those 135gr GDs do outta that SP101.

Hmmm...Maybe I'll consign those loads to the GP100. That big guy seemed to be having a problem with the SP101 and the 357 135 gr GDSB loads. I haven't tried them yet but the 38+P loads do well in the SP101. Follow up shots would be difficult in that little revolver with those loads. I'll try both side by side in the same gun to see if any great difference is detectable. The SP is my "under the desk at computer" safety valve and I think the 38+P loads will do fine for it's intended purposes.

According to Speer website, the 125gr 357 magnum has 584 muzzle energy and 284 muzzle energy for the 38 +P. You will probably feel the difference!
However, the 158gr 357 has somewhat less muzzle energy, around 540, so, the recoil, for me, is less "snappy". I like the 158gr in 357 better than any other loadings. Less snap and more shove....easier on the palms.

I've shot Remington 125 gr in 357 and you'll know you just shot a 357 Magnum in the SP101. Now, there's quite a kick if you're into that and your hand will know it. Actually, I think it's worse than the 44 Magnum with 245 gr bullets. However, there's a big difference in the M29 and the SP101 so weight and grip style have a lot to do with it.

Speers 135 gr GDSB has nowhere near the velocity or recoil of Speers 125 gr and 158 gr loads. It is a midrange 357 Mag load made especially for short barreled firearms. It reportedly only has a velocity of about 1000 FPS out of a 1 7/8" barrel. I have shot both 357 Mag 135 gr GDSB and 38 Spec +P 135 gr GDSB out of 3 inch SP101 and the Mag load only has slightly more recoil that the 38 Spec +P.

The bullet they use is much different than the other GDHP's I've bought to reload...a much wider cavity. At least their 125 gr is not that wide. According to those specs I may get about 1200 from a 4 inch GP100 if it yields 1000 fps with that short a barrel.

Golden Saber 357 magnum rounds are quite nice to shoot in the SP101. Try some of them. I think they are around 1100 fps. Probably similar to the 135gr GDSB

I have a couple boxes of those. Buffalo Bore's 38+P 158 gr HP(LSWHC-GC) is impressive with that wide hollow cavity. I tried those as well.I generally shoot cast bullets from the 358421 mold or a custom 170 gr mold from Mountain Molds. The Lee 358-158-RF is a great bullet as well. Easy on the barrel, easy on my wallet!
