New P95 owner, ammo suggestions?

I just bought my first gun, a Ruger P95 9mm and will be picking it up on Saturday. I can't wait to take it to the range right after I pick it up. What is my best bet for ammo to take this gun to the range for some target shooting?

Thanks

chiroguy,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new acquisition. Your question concerning ammunition for you P95 is not clear cut and simple. I have had only two hiccups with mine in 600 rounds, both in the same 10 round session, a it appears that both were due to operator error. These were early on during the first 100 rounds through the gun, I believe, and I have not had a problem since and I am using any name brand ammo I can get cheaply.

My point is, I don’t find my P95 to be all that fussy with ammo but I have been using the Winchester White Box (WWB) 100 round packs from Wal-Mart with Remington UMC from my local gun shop for most of the 600 plus rounds she has seen. I have also used American Eagle, MagTech and 20 rounds of surplus ammo.

My only advice that I feel is important is to field strip the gun when you get it home and give it a good first cleaning to get rid of the factory protective coating. Field stripping and cleaning are both quite easy for this gun so just follow the manual and be sure to get that extractor pushed down before removing the slide. Cleaning will allow you to get very familiar with the gun which is always a good thing before you first fire it!

Good luck, have fun and please give us a range report after you have had time to take her out!

I had a first gen P95DC.
...quite honestly, it shot ANYTHING i loaded it with. i primarily used CCI Blazers to practice (i'm guessing 3000-4000 rounds of Blazers over 12 years, at least), and Gold Dots for carry. both shot POA, along with everything else from HPs to cheap range reloads. i think i might have fired 15+ different ammo brands through it without any noticeable change in accuracy.

Picked up my P95 this morning, got her home and stripped and cleaned the gun. Then it was off to the range. I just got back and everything went great. I put a 100 rounds of WWB from wal-mart through her and not a single problem. Now I just need to work on getting those groups tighter.

Thanks for the advice!

Welcome, and enjoy your P95! This is one of the guns that I'll never get rid of.

I put 2500 rds. through it since I bought it in January. Only issue I had was operator error of limp wrist when I first bought it. As mentioned, it eats anything I put through it.

Tip: Round count can be achieved by simply saving the box flaps. Doesn't take up much space at all.

Congrats, the P95 was my first auto and I really like it. For target, WWB 115gr MC or equivilent. I like Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p JHP for SD. I have also tried the WWB 147gr JHP. Have experienced no failure to Feed / Fire / Eject.
I saw a review somewhere which stated the 147gr JHP is a poor choice for SD, but I can't recall why or where.

Mine ate any factory or dented green moldy surplus ammo I put in it. Mine did not like some of the after market hi cap mags. I had to buy Ruger mags to get reliability.

I shot a lot of the 115+P+ hp back in the day when it was the thing. Now modern 147gr hp offer the better performance.
