LCP Ammo

I know, I know, I'm sure this has been beat like a dead horse, but I am looking for some info and advice on the best SD ammo. I did a search and read the threads, but I'm really wanting some info on the Lehigh/Underwood loads, and theSpeer Gold Dot PERSONAL PROTECTION 90 Bullet Weight GDHP. I currently use the Golden Sabre, but I'm feeling there are better loads to carry for the 380 out there. I would like to see what gets the most approval rating out there. Thanks for your time.

I wouldn't overthink a .380 selection. After plinking into sand backstops and digging the slugs out of the sand (poor man's ballistic gel) I'm of the opinion that nothing is really going to expand reliably. I'm not suggesting you carry FMJ ball ammo, but I'd pick up whatever PDX1 or "Train and Defend" or other defnese load you can find at Wally World, or wherever you shop, and don't worry about it.

I'm carrying Critical Defense in my .380 now, but the Gold Dot loads functioned well also. Both were as accurate as the little sights would allow.

Hornady has a 380 Auto 90gr FTX Critical Defense that got 10" of penetration with successful expansion into gel through heavy clothing. Does not meet FBI performance standards, but pretty good for that caliber.

I'm brand new to the LCP group too. I was seduced by the ease of carry. Frankly I found it to be a pretty tame shooter compared to what I expected with that tiny grip and weight. I shot a box of PDX1 (same brand I carry in my 9s) with no problems. I think that's what I'll be carrying. I think CatKillr is right on. Based on what I've read, I don't think you can expect much expansion.

The Critical Defense from Hornady is very good, along with Ruger & Sig Sauer's new SD ammo.
I do not have personal experience with the others mentioned.

I feed mine Hornady Z-Max. (probably would have bought the equivalent Critical Defense load, but Z-Max was a couple bucks a box cheaper since Zombies are out of season around here)

I use Critical Defense myself, but have heard there's not much expansion anyways. The argument is you might as well carry basic ball.

There are plenty of videos on You Tube showing ballistic gel tests with lots of .380 ammo. One fellow who goes by ShootingTheBull410 did a very extensive series of tests and he was looking for rounds that would meet the FBI penetration criteria of 12-18" (under penetration and over penetration are not desirable). The winners were the loads shooting the Hornady 90 gr. XTP bullet (like the Hornady American Gunner and Hornady Custom) and the best thing is they are less expensive than the real premium stuff like the Hornady Critical Defense or Federal HST (which under penetrated). Another decent load was the Federal Hydra Shok.

I think that for this marginal .380 round that ammo selection is MORE critical than it is for 9mm or 45ACP, where there are many more loads that will meet the FBI performance criteria. With the .380 those rounds that expand really well (like the Federal HST or Win. PDX1 or Critical Defense) do not penetrate very far. Those that penetrate well do not expand as much. The FMJs all over-penetrate and have pretty poor wound channels. If expansion is your priority and 8-10" penetration is ok for you, the best expansion was with the Federal HST. The loads using the Hornady XTP bullet all expanded, but to a lesser degree than the best expanders but that put them in the 12"-14" penetration range thru 4 layers of denim. I use the Hornady American Gunner XTP ammo that I found at Gander Mountain at a real nice price.

Since I've read so many articles about penetration issues, I usually just keep flat nose range ammo in my LCP with a couple extra magazines. That way Im always ready if I decide to stop by the range. *Edit - I have ran the Sig JHP through it with no issues

I carry Lehigh Xtreme Penetrator. Functions fine in both of my LCPs.

The Lehigh Extreme Penetrator also performed very well in gel testing. Due to the fact that it is not an expanding bullet, it was very consistent, including the 4 layers of denim test. As with all ammo, one just needs to make sure that it will function in your pistol. I don't see this round in any stores by me and due to the NY SAFE act (what a joke) I can't order ammo from any online source.

Thats to bad . I used to live in N.Y. Glad I moved. These days , you have to buy online to get what you are looking for and for a good price. Those states that do not allow internet purchases of ammo are really putting its citizens at a disadvantage.

Lucky Gunner just did a test on a bunch of ammo for .45, .40, 9mm, and .380. In .380 the Critical Defense did very well. Go to their web site, click on labs.

Anything using the Hornady XTP bullet should work fine. I use the Fiocchi Extrema which utilizes the XTP bullet.
