Winchester "Western" 22 LR

Academy has 525 round boxes of Winchester Western 22 LR for sale. What's the big deal about that? Well, the ammo itself is not. Nothing personal if you like the stuff, but it's probably some pretty crappy bulk ammo.

What IS the big deal is where has stuff like this been for the past four years? Prior to the Great Rimfire Ammo Shortage, I could drop by my local Academy store and expect to find four or five different varieties of bulk 22 LR in 500 round boxes. In addition to the Winchester, they probably would have Blazer, Remington Thunderduds, Federal Champion Value Packs, all priced at around $20-22 a box. Usually, each week one brand would be on sale for a dollar or two less.

Then it all simply disappeared. Not disappeared as in hard to find or get, but disappeared as in "gone." It seems like they simply didn't make stuff like Western during the shortage years.

Now that the drought may at last be ending, those "lost" brands seem to be reappearing.

Strange times we live in.

Not tryin' to start anything, but there might be a few forum members here with more than a couple of boxes of .22 LR stashed away.

Great news! I'll have to add a few pallets of it to my hoardpile.

I know you're not. I look forward to the potential for 22 normality. I may actually shoot 22 more if I know I can get a reasonably priced brick off the shelf.

I find the number of 22's I shoot is directly proportional to the number of woodchucks I have on the property. That is why the 3 bricks I have had for the last 20 years is holding up well. Now centerfire reloads different story.

I recently purchased a Ruger .22 with the .22 mag cylinder to replace the one I regret selling about 40 years ago. I have a stash of .22lr, along with a number of short and long. Dad had a lot of that stuff in the garage when they were relocated to assisted living and we cleared out the house. So, I'm not low on .22 of any type.

But, .22 mag, different story.... it has been a struggle to find .22 mag ammo. I can find .22lr in quantities at "decent" prices ($5 per 50 is about the going rate).

So, While I'm not that particular about brand of ammo, my .22 guns are a little selective with their diet.

The lever action and revolvers don't care. The semi-autos are a little picky. CCI standard velocity seems to be a good compromise....

I know this has been covered in great detail, but there was never an ammo shortage. But there was an ammo buying frenzy. There was more 22 rimfire ammo produced in the last few years than at any other time. There was also way more purchased than at any other time.

As to why you saw little to none of certain brandings is just due to quantities of it made. Seeing as how you seldom saw ANY rimfire ammo, it surely makes sense you would see none of the less common brands
