I'm a big fan of Speer. Gold Dot 147 for defense and Lawman 147 for range and spare mag. Very accurate for me and consistent quality.

Speer Gold Dot. Made right across the border from me when I lived in Washington State (Lewiston, ID).

'Best' is subjective, when it comes to factory ammunition. There are also several forms of 'best': Best accuracy, best price, best bullet expansion, best reliability, etc...
The subjective part is when a friend shows you the tight 25 yd groups he shot with brand X ammo in his Browning Hi Power pistol. Then you get the same ammo, shoot it in your Ruger SR9 (or Glock, Sig, S&W, etc), and find fliers all over the target and/or the ammo jams every three or four rounds...

Other's experiences with ammo can be helpful with initial selections, but ultimately you should try many brands and types of ammo in your gun before you invest in a great quantity of it. Some people have great performance with dirt-cheap ammo in their guns, while for others it is not great.

At a match on the weekend one of our guys had two rounds from American Eagle not fire after two double strikes. First I have seen with factory ammo. Seems to me as previous poster said, find one that works in your gun and fly at it.

When it comes to self defense ammo if the best in my gun came from Timbuktu I would use it. You only get one trip around unless you think the Zombie rage has merit.

As it is I have a box or two of Win Ranger 147 gr SXT the RCMP use. Seems to work well in all my 9MM pistols, including my Sig 226 Mke 25 sitting on my dresser. Should settle any discussions that might arise in the middle of the night.

For furry defense the 9MM would be loaded with FMJ 147 gr bullets.

Take Care

Bob

124gr Speer Lawman for the range. I also like Fiocchi and Sellier & Bellot ammo, but these are not made here.

124gr +P Speer Gold Dot or Winchester Ranger-T for defense. Another good choice is the 135gr +P Federal Tactical Bonded, if you can find it.

presumably, you'll get a lot of personal preference statements with little if any objectivity. as pointed out, BEST is very subjective.

I'm a hornaday xtp fan myself in 147gr. A trifle pricy but it seems to work.

I like to use Remington UMC and freedom munitions for range use.
Remington ultimate defense for the home D mag.

I Use nothing but 115 grain CCI for 9mm. In the last 3 cases, ( 3000 rounds ), Ive had 2 hard primers, ( which 1 fired after the second strike ) and 1 dud.

So 3 bad rounds out of 3000. I can live with that. Dependability is everything.

And Ive been buying it for about $215 out the door. So the price is right.

Ive tried other brands, some pretty pricey, some wally world crap, , and they didnt perform, or have the accuracy. When you get one or two bad rounds in a box of 50, thats a problem to me.

So I stick with whats proven and works. And CCI works.

I also use CCI in 22 mag. Same same. Works great.
