Okay...I understand (sort of) why there isn't much pistol ammo around for sale due to statements made by our current political leadership. What I do not understand *at all* is why 22 Long Rifle is hard to get! Annual production is estimated at 2 - 2.5 BILLION rounds! Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_Long_Rifle That's a fair chunk o' shootin' to go through all that ammo.
So... what is the reason for the 22 LR shortage? Does anyone have any insider knowledge?
I'm not sure about up north but I can always find some .22lr at a bunch of places.I wonder if it is not a regional thing or just that everybody is worried about the pistol ammo and just forgot to reorder the .22's.
My take is that most people will buy as much of what they can find anytime, anyplace. This also means .22 ammo. I have been finding .22's at two local Wally Worlds by me. Last week when I was there they six boxes of Federal bulk (550 rounds). I picked up one box, the guy standing in line behind me bought all five. As he was waiting to pay, he was boasting to me that he has 7000 rounds at home and that he makes a big circle to different stores to grab up what ever he can find.
It's that kind of buying that is causing some/most of the ammo shortage.
I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.
Sometimes we are our own worst enemies. In the not too distant past, we were happy with a couple hundred rounds of 22s in our stash. Now with all the hoarding, we think we must do the same and stockpile all the ammo we can afford. Before this started, I seldom had more than a couple boxes of 22s on hand but now I find myself getting caught up in the dilemma and buying bricks ... just because. This would have been a good year to own stock in ammo companies!
I used to wait until I ran out and then go buy two bricks to restart the cycle. Now I buy when I see them but I am neither hunting nor making rounds to buy up what I can find. If I get two to three bricks I will just use them until the supply gets lower but I start looking as soon as I break into the last brick; I don’t wait until I run out any longer. Buying the smaller boxes is so damn expensive and I like to shoot .22LR whenever I can. People are still buying everything they find here but Californians have a lot less gun freedom and folks here in San Diego are still scared of what’s coming.
I buy in bricks. My kids go through ammo..... 50 round boxes just don't hack it .... Need a couple more bricks. No I don't hoard. I like to have around 2000 rounds handy though.
People I talk to are buying as much 22lr as they can get there hands on because it is all they can afford to shot a few hundred rounds of every weekend. I myself go through about 2000 rds a month.

Based on what I see around here, he will not be boasting so much when the prices go back down in a few months, and he has 7K of over priced ammo.
I'm seeing more available around here than in the last seven months. Prices will soon be coming back down.
I have a reasonable stock, but I bought all of mine while it was $15-$18 per brick. This morning I saw a bunch at $27/brick - I passed on it.

I have had the same problem trying to find 22 ammo! I use to buy it when I needed it, and now that I just bought a MK III Hunter now I can't find anything and plus hunting season is coming soon. I love the Aguila Stuff, and you find find it no where. Try online, there are some places that still have some.....so hurry! Do a search for .22 ammo!
I think 41 hunter has it right. Folks can't find/afford other ammo, so they are buying .22, just for something to shoot. Now, if they would reload, part of the problem would be solved, if they could find primers!
I think the days of $10.00 bricks are over, though. I recently bought a brick of W/W Super X hollow points, and it cost me $32.00.
I just bought my 13yr old daughter a 10/22 and now she isnt after mine or my wifes. I hate to say it but I keep 3000 to 5000 rnds in house at all times but if you look at the amount we shoot prob 2000+ a week with the 3 of us and we love to shoot our AR's but $40 for a 100 rnds vs $12 for 550 the 22lr is all we can afford to shoot and that is our major family fun going to the range every saturday and once or twice during the week. This amount will slow down a lot once hunting season starts and we spend our spare time in the woods olny shooting a couple rnds of .270 a wk. I dont horde but when I get down to 1500 or less we buy what we can find at waly world.
I went to Cabela's yesterday ... looking to spend my birthday gift card. To my surprise, the ammo shelves were very well stocked. About the only thing they didn't have was bulk pack 22 ammo. They did have an excellent variety and supply of 50 & 100 round boxes of 22s. Maybe this situation is starting to change.

Dankim ... Why would you feel guilty? If your shooting it at a rate of 2000+ per week, 3000 - 5000 rounds is barely a 2 week supply for your family. I'm on pace to shoot over 25,000 rounds again this year, and have always maintained an inventory of at least 5,000 .22s, 3,000 9s & 1,000 .45s on the shelf at all times. While some might call these levels "hoarding" (in the current context of limited ammo), I started these inventory levels many years ago and see no reason to change.
Found some more sites that have some in stock! Hurry! If I shot the Waly World ammo, then it would be ok.....but I don't so that makes my(Aguila) ammo hard to find.
