While inspecting a box of 240gr Winchester white box 44 mag Ammo I came across one cartridge that the bottom looks like it wasn't machined the diameter of the base is slightly larger and the primer looks larger as well. It's mark 44 mag has any one come across this before? Thanks!
Is the head stamp and OAL the same on the oddball as the rest? I am thinking maybe a cartridge of a different caliber found its way into the box.
Does the 44 mag use large primers or small? The size difference between them isn't a lot, if you had one that was a different size than the others my first thought would be small vs large (not sure if there are any other size options). Unless they are all large primers and one seems even larger. If that is the case are you sure it is the primer that is different and not something like the primer pocket that is different and here I am thinking about factors such as whether or not the primers are (trying to recall the right word) swaged or crimped. In other words if one primer missed the step where the pocket was reshape to pin the primer in place then it might appear slightly larger simply because you can see all of it compared to the others where you cannot see all the way to the edge of the primer.
I understand what your saying. I'm going to try to upload a couple pictures so you can see what I'm talking about. What confuses me is that, if it's the exact same cartridge except the it missed the machining stage then the primer should be identical to the others, but it's not. It's flatter and its diameter is larger. There is a 44 cal 240 gr bullet seated in the casing and they are both marked "super ww 44 rem mag" I'll figure out how to get a few pictures on here since I use my phone I might have down them to my computer and do it that way. I inspect every cartridge I buy ever since I bought a box with 9 cartridges dented pretty badly or I probably wouldn't of noticed it.
GONRA sez Rj5000 may hava rare collector's item.

Sorry forgot to leave a note in the pics. The one with what seems like a different primer than the rest of my 44's is on the left. The cartridge on the right is the one that wasn't machined. You can't really tell in the photos. But they both say ( ww super 44 rem mag )
The cartridge on the right didn't have the groove/undercut properly formed in the manufacturing process. The 'different' primer seems to have had less seating pressure (loose primer pocket?) so the radiused edge did not flatten out a bit, like the other primer.
